Glasgow victory tastes so sweet

Glasgow's players took on their Edinburgh counterparts last night, and came out the deserved victors, after a display of determination, passion and commitment.

Edinburgh did look the sleeker of the two teams, with great passing amongst the backs, but ultimately, they huffed and they puffed, but couldn't blow the Glasgow house down.

The score remained close for the full match, with Glasgow the leaders for the majority of the 80 or so minutes. There was little room for flair or creativity, as it was evident that the team that would win would be the team that didn't miss their chances.

Glasgow have placed great stock in fitness and physical development this season, and it certainly looks like the work of Mark Bitcon is starting to bear fruit. Last night's defensive display, like last week's against the Borders, was strong with the tackling in the last minute being as solid as that of the first minute. Players, like Sean Lamont, Andy Henderson and Graeme Morrison seemed to relish the chance to impress against their international colleagues.

Glasgow were up for the head to head physical confrontation of the game, whereas some Edinburgh players seemed content to settle for the cheap shot. This was further aggravated by Rob Dickson, the touch judge, who continued to be selective in the offences he notices when officiating in matches involving Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Concerns that Glasgow would struggle in the forward play, with two locks injured and the late call-off of Kevin Tkachuk, were unfounded. The tight five performed heroics in the loose and the set piece, with Dan Turner enjoying an excellent Celtic League first start. The back row contested fiercely at the breakdown, and the substitutes were able to pick up the pace on joining the fray. Glasgow apprentice John Beattie looked at home with his full-time professional colleagues, with a manner and style of play physically reminiscent of his father.

These two recent games have set a foundation of points for Glasgow to build on in the coming weeks of competition in the Celtic League. Glasgow have shown that they can "win ugly" when it counts, and can enjoy being fourth in the league table. With the defence looking secure, we can look forward to our exciting runners being given a chance to shine in the weeks to come.

Wasn't it great????? Really enjoyed the game last night - and was especially pleased to see the support the players got from the rest of squad in the stand, who seem to have enjoyed the win as much as the fans did. Well done to the players - hope they enjoyed their celebrations too!
