SRU can't afford apprentice contract for Smith

Stuart Smith will return to New Zealand for a rugby scolarship with Waikato
Today's Herald claims that Scotland could lose a promising young player to New Zealand because the SRU can't afford to pay him a £6000-a-year apprentice contract.

As reported last week, Stuart Smith, the 21-year-old who plays centre for Glasgow Hawks, is to take up a rugby scholarship with Waikato in New Zealand – and could qualify to play for the All Blacks. Stuart had attracted the attention of Glasgow and was to be considered for an apprentice contract, but the SRU felt they were unable to afford a deal due to financial constraints.

Hawks' Hugh Barrow told The Hearld: "He was told that the offer from the New Zealand people would remain on the table until November 30, but Stuart clearly wanted to make a career in his homeland and he has the talent to do that.

"He was told by Glasgow that he would be considered for an apprentice contract at £6000 a year but, unfortunately, the SRU decided that, because of the financial constraints they are currently suffering, they could not afford to make an offer to Stuart.

"He is now about to return to Hamilton to take up his offer from them. It's sad this has happened and it sends out all the wrong signals.

"Here we have a young kid from Bearsden, who has risen through the Scottish system, and the SRU are allowing him to go to New Zealand, where, theoretically, he could become qualified to represent the All Blacks.

"On the other hand, we have Ben MacDougall, a man who has spent all his life in Australia, being signed on an expensive contract, despite the drugs issue and the fact nobody knows whether he will be any good in the union code."

He added: "The bottom line is that the SRU should be encouraging the likes of Stuart Smith rather than Ben MacDougall, but there is a total lack of direction in the game. They are all hiding behind the Genesis Review, which is turning into an excuse to do nothing."

Absolutely disgraceful that a promising young player cannot get an apprenticeship but the SRU can splash out an exorbitant amount for an untried player with it would appear even less experience in rugby union than Smith! Who makes these ridiculous decisions?

From a french guy,

I don't anderstand either, maybe a fashion to bring players from rugby league.

But a player who grow in the country, good in his club, and apprenticeship so CHEAP for SRU.

It is a big problem of organisation, about structures during study/professionnal rugby.

Not to be to much nationnalist, but in the northern emisphere we should be more confident and build with our players.

Ex: france was a famous country to provide genius centres, and now Marsh, liebenberg, maybe because of the mmodern rugby.

No a country team with their proper STYLE!

Just a word about IRELAND, they provide their players and are the best celtic team at the moment.

Best wishes for the scots v South Africa

Hope to see the glaswegians at the top of the celtic league

Agree with all of the above..... however, have heard that Smith wasn't actually all that keen to join Glasgow, or any other Scottish pro team. In which case, maybe we are better off with a player who will give us his all?

A Sabbatical in New Zealand will do ANY potential Pro Rugby Player no end of good. It's something I recommended to both my sons - Professional players now.
Needless to say, they ignored my advice...but they ain't doin' too bad....
