Hawks game off

Steve Swindall is one of the three players on Glasgow duty this weekend
The Hawks game against Boroughmuir has been called off after three players were called up to play for Glasgow on Saturday night.

Hawks, holders of both the Premier One trophy and the national cup, have been granted dispensation to call off the Old Anniesland match because three of their players have been called up by Glasgow for the Celtic League game against Neath Swansea Ospreys, also on Saturday. The trio required for duty with the professional team at Hughenden are hooker Fergus Thomson, flanker Steve Swindall, and full back Colin Shaw.

A club losing more than two players for duty with a professional team can apply to the SRU championship committee for permission to postpone a league match.

A new date for the Hawks v Boroughmuir match has yet to be arranged.

Common sense has prevailed..........rather surprising given that there's not alot of it about these days, especially at the SRU....but credit where its due....the right decision.

I think I'm right in saying that Hawks now have a number of league matches outstanding?

Out of these postponed matches one succumbed to weather problems the rest of the games due to players going to Glasgow in professional matches.

How many Glasgow professional matches have been cancelled this season due to the number of players falling below what's expected? In fact how many Glasgow matches have been cancelled for any reason this season?

There's another situation in all this. The Glasgow professional team doesn't have much to play for or win this season? Hawks have a chance to win the top league.

I thought the SRUs approach was to help Scottish rugby achive "new heights" not hinder them.

Just a few of my thoughts.

Just to get the facts right, Hawks now have four postponed league matches and one postponed cup match to play. Two of the league matches have been postponed because of loss of players to the Glasgow pro team; the other three due to the weather. Another point to be borne in mind is that this week-end Hawks also have two players "advised" to rest prior to international duty, Kenny Sinclair with the Scotland "7s" squad and Scott Forrest with the Under-21 team. So Hawks are actually short of five players because of pro and representative calls. Hawks may also be also concerned that a place in European competition could be made available to the top one or two clubs in the Premiership as a result of the review of the Scottish game currently being conducted at Murrayfield.
