Investor linked to Glasgow

Kenny Logan has met with a potential investor in the Glasgow Warriors franchise
An unamed Aberdeen businessman is reported to be in the frame to launch a bid for the Glasgow Warriors franchise.

Today's Scotland on Sunday reports that on Wednesday January 12, the very day that Phil Anderton was walking out of Murrayfield, the businessman was sitting down with Glasgow's Kenny Logan to talk about a move for the franchise.

The potential investor prefers to keep his name out of the press for the time being, until he has had further and more detailed talks with the Union. He is a wealthy individual but rather than commit all his own money he hopes to form a consortium of like-minded backers.

A long-term rugby fan who travelled to Australia for the Rugby World Cup in 2003, he became involved with his home-town club, putting together a commercial plan to secure Aberdeen Grammar's long-term financial security. He has worked to expand this plan into a model he believes would work equally well with professional rugby.

"I don't see myself as a sugar daddy like some of those guys in England who are only now, after ten years, beginning to make money. I want to bring an altogether cannier Scottish approach to things," he said last week while confirming his ongoing interest.

When asked whether the political upheaval at Murrayfield had caused any change in his attitude, the party was unequivocal.

"I thought long and hard about this," he said last week. "But the answer is no. Whoever emerges to run Scottish rugby at Murrayfield will need to address the funding of the pro-teams one way or another. The two-board system cannot continue and a unitary board of four executives, four non-executives and four club members, is the way forward."

Although he did add the obvious rider: "No one in their right minds would buy a team right now."
