Both conteders were presented as featured players at the traditional captain's press conference at Stirling.
"We're both here because we're both playing in the centre. It's just something different we're trying," Ross told The Telegraph in an imaginative, if rather implausible, explanation:
"It's very close I think," said Dan when asked how he saw the contest between them. "Gordon and Leeds have been playing very well. Hopefully they'll make the right decision." Dan went on to explain that Glasgow's decision to drop him to the bench in favour of Calvin Howarth – a player who is still in Scotland's 35-strong training squad and who could yet emerge as a dark horse contender in the fly-half race – had been a spur to him after his disappointing form in Scotland's four-match Test series last November.
"After the autumn campaign it was a bit of a downer," Dan said. "Coming back to Glasgow I was on the bench for the first three weeks and I was a bit disappointed. On the other hand, it was a good wake-up call for me. I got stuck into training and I think I'm feeling the benefits of that now. I feel really good and I'm just raring to go."
