Kenny has decided not to take up the second year on his contract at Glasgow, his present club, as he concentrates on his business career and on the task of becoming a father for the first time when Gabby, his wife, gives birth to twins that are expected in July.
"I will be 33 in April and I don't want to flog myself for the sake of it," he tells Lewis Stuart in The Times. "I had the option of another year but I wanted to finish when I am still playing reasonably well."
Kenny moved to Glasgow last summer after an eight-year spell with London Wasps.
Hugh Campbell, the Glasgow coach, was quick to pay tribute. "He brought a wealth of experience and knowledge after winning all those caps and from his career in London, which culminated in Wasps winning both the Heineken Cup and the Zurich Premiership. He has been excellent at passing all that on to the young players," he said.
"Since Kenny started his representative career at Glasgow, it is fitting that he should finish it here as well and I have nothing but praise for he dedication he has shown."
