Myreside return for Cammy Mather?

Cammy Mather could return to Watsonians
Watsonians are aiming to bring Glasgow's Cammy Mather back to club rugby as player/coach by the end of this week.

Today's Evening News reports that club president David Harris says he is optimistic a deal can be done with the ten-times capped flanker.

But while the key may be the extent to which a rift between 'Sonians and principal backer Martin Krajewski has now healed, Cammy himself insists a return to Myreside is no formality, saying: "I have always said I wanted to go back to Watsonians one day in recognition of all they did for me when I was starting out in senior rugby after arriving from New Zealand in the early 1990s.

"However, it is true to say I have other options open to me at this stage.

"I want to make the decision that is right for me - and also to be fair to Watsonians at this stage. One day I will wear Watsonians colours again but nothing is signed and sealed just yet."

Harris remained more bullish, saying that a new accord with traditional sponsors Joslin Rowe, who have been estimated to put in £100,000 annually to Watsonian funds, was in the pipeline.

"We want to give as much as we can back to our sponsors and benefactors," said Harris.

"So far as Cammy Mather is concerned we are hopeful of putting something together that will be attractive to him. Cammy has a lot of experience to offer as befits a top class player. Having worked in the pro-ranks for the past eight years he is exactly the type who can pass on his knowledge to a string of young prospects we have coming through the ranks."

Last season Mather was released, by Glasgow, to play for Watsonians against Glasgow's top club, the Hawks, in a decisive league match. After Mather came on - he was a substitute - I asked the Hawks captain if he made any difference to the Watsonians' team. "Not really", came the reply, "all the b*st*rd can do is punch!"

And, Hugh, you should know that Watsonians are not warriors any more. They are all Terra Cotta mercenaries!

Wonderful word that..."mercenaries"!

Don't the three pro sides in Scotland have any foreign players then? No?

Something to chew over...I hear there's alot more "end of career" foreign pro's on their way over to the Scottish pro setup this Summer.

Disappointing thing is that a few positions in the Glasgow side, in which we've just seen young full blooded Scottish players called up to the International setup, are up for grabs at club level when these foreign imports arrive in the Summer.

Will these "end of career" imports be classed as "mercenaries" in the Scotish pro game or is it just the club players who will continue to be tagged with that word?

like the guy that boards the plane in Auckland as a hairdresser and comes off in London as a junior All Black--when will they ever learn--what is the purpose of our pro teams to bring on young Scottish talent or to boost the pension funds of over the hill antipodeans
