John Beattie has welcomed news of the Rainbow Cup
Players from Scotland's pro-teams have welcomed news of the proposed intercontinental tournament - The Rainbow Cup.

The new tournament will feature Glasgow, Edinburgh and Borders along with the nine top South African provinces, four leading Italian teams and the rest of the Celtic League sides from Wales and Ireland.

John Beattie, who has just clinched a full-time deal with Glasgow, said in today's Daily Record: "For all the professional players in the country, this will be like a trip to dreamland.

"Competing in the Heineken Cup and Celtic League is a great experience as it is but the prospect of testing ourselves against guys from South Africa and Italy will mean a massive step up and a thrilling challenge. I just can't wait. Rugby is like a religion in South Africa and getting the opportunity to play there is the ambition of every youngster in the game."
