Venue switch for Ospreys match

Glasgow Warriors will be making the move along Great Western Road from their Firhill home to Old Anniesland for their Celtic League match against Ospreys on Friday 27 January (ko 7.30pm).

Firhill based Partick Thistle FC will be playing a league fixture against Forfar Athletic the following day (Saturday 28 January) so the decision has been made by all parties for this one occasion to move the Warriors game the previous evening so the pitch can be prepared for the football fixture.

Scottish Rugby Head of Commercial and Marketing John Donnelly, said: "This is the only fixture change this season due to the Warriors having a home match scheduled for the night before a Partick Thistle home tie. We greatly appreciate the support from the Warriors loyal fans and ask them to continue to cheer on Glasgow by coming along to Old Anniesland on the 27th. Our ticket centre staff are working to configure the seating areas for all gold and silver season ticket holders and further information on ticketing, ground access and the like will be available and posted on our website as soon as possible. Tickets will still be available in the lead-up to the game from www.glasgowwarriors.org or by calling 0131 346 5008 and on the night of the game at the ground."

Warriors Head Coach Hugh Campbell added: "We've had a few team runs at Old Anniesland in the past few weeks so we are used to the ground and the facilities here and we're confident that the players will take it in their stride. We're looking to play some attractive rugby that the crowd will enjoy."

Mark Laidlaw, Scottish Rugby Stadium Manager, said: "The decision has been taken on a ground care basis. Depending on the kind of game played, even with a pitch surface as good as Firhill, rugby can sometimes cut up the turf, especially during set piece play in certain weather conditions. With a league match the following day for The Jags, we can help them by moving the Warriors match against the Ospreys."

Full circle with the Warriors leaving a football ground and playing on one of the "old rugby " grounds of Scotland.Rugby has been played on these pitches since 1883 when Glasgow Accies arrived there from Burnbank via Maryhill(or in estate agent talk North Kelvinside) having shared the former with another football club called Rangers F.C.

Farcical what is the point of buying a guaranteed seat season ticket if the goods are not delivered. Where will we play next ?
Lets enter into an agreement to play at a ground only to be told we cant play there. Scottish Rugby in one hell of a state, now there is a shock.I thought this was now the professional era obviously I was wrong.( At least there might not be Bird crap on every seat like firhill)

Don't know which nest you're sitting under at Firhill - try a different seat! Seeing as Leinster have played at 3 grounds recently, and their fans are coping, I don't see why we can't cope too.

We're being given notice, its a rugby ground getting our money... wonder if they'll put in any temporary seating?

Many people saw this coming when the Partick Thistle deal was announced. I said at the time on here that it could clash with the football played there.

I just hope the SRU aren't paying Partick Thistle for the use of the stadium on the day that Glasgow are playing down the road at another place. Bad business practice.

Firstly a little help for Vicki. Big Col is obviously sitting in the gold area at Firhill, where the majority of the seats have baked solid bird crap on them.

Firhill is not the promised land, if you do manage to get a pint from the grumpy dwarfs before the game, it seems like milliseconds before they start their parade up and down the bar screaming at us, and our visitors..."tae finish up yer drinks n moove ootside"...pleasant and customer facing THEY AINT!

When "ye dae moove ootside", as instructed, you can sit anywhere you like in an effort to avoid both pigeon crap and any effort on the part of the stewarding staff.

The youngsters are denied the access to their heros that they enjoyed at Hughenden and the players are asked to perform in a half empty cavern where they can bearly hear the crowd.

The answer?

Well it is less than obvious given the lack of decent stadia for anything other than the round ball. Perhaps we should take a leaf out of the French book. In France every village, never mind town has a decent seated stadium, used for all field sports.

What would it take for the local authorities in the area served by Glasgow District Rugby, Sport Scotland and the SRU to put together a Rugby Academy in a purpose built stadium?

The problem...small minded politicians who will not spend money beyond their little kingdoms and the big plug on the M8 that prevents money leaving Edinburgh!

Final plan, let's introduce small minded bigotry into the game, that should get the masses flooding through the turnstiles...there is always money in tribal behaviour.

Jim are you standing in the next round of Local Government elections?

Jim I've never read such snobbery in all my days. You criticise ordinary working folk for having what amounts to a guid Weegie accent, you moan about the money not leaving Edinburgh (I think the suitable pro-team stadia problem exists there as well does it not?) and then you have the nerve to start harping on about small minded bigotry?! I think you need to sort your own head out first before you start criticising other people's attitudes. I know loads of Old Firm supporters and by God they aren't anywhere near as bitter and twisted as many of the 'posh punters' whose posts I read on this site. The bottom line is that rugby NEEDS to share stadia with the football world and it NEEDS to take a leaf out of its damn book and get real if it ever wants to be a professional sport in this country. The way it's going right now that just isn't going to happen. Why? Because barely anyone goes to your games because it is perceived as being popluated by snobs and wannabes. And that's a pity because the game is a delight to witness. It just needs to reach out to normal people to make it a success. And if that means playing in a (God-forsaken) football gound then so bloomin' what?!! Some of you really need to get real and grow up.

And here we are back to what the Scots do best.... moaning!! I agree with Vicki, Leinster have had to do it, why cant we just cope. Its not like the match has been cancelled or moved miles away.
And bringing this back to what the scots do best..... is there a bar facility? hehe

The thing is when your business is up to the hilt in continually rising debt the idea is to try and calm down in the spending area a bit.

The SRU already have the deal in place for Firhill renting the facilities for games.

Are the SRU paying for the use of these facilities on the day they are possibly paying for renting the facilities down the road for the day?

The SRU are burning money they don't have. That's the problem.

Posted by vicki on January 13, 2006 10:41 PM | Reply to this comment

Then again, perhaps they pay for Firhill on a game-by-game basis and aren't paying for the ground that day because the facilities aren't being used.

Firhill's not leased on a game-by-game basis and Glasgow Warriors won't be leasing Firhill after this Celtic League season finishes.

Why don't you just ask Gordon McKie what the deal is--any way over the years most the great sides have played at Anniesland including the All Blacks, the Boks and the Barbarians after all it is only for one night

What a NIGHTMARE!
Scottish people should ask their politics to build and maintain a decent stadium for sports like rugby.
My rugby club Senlis (France)uses two rugy pitches, facilities, seats, and club house bar, build and maintained by the town(15 000 people).
Glasgow Warriors Team needs support, so maybe there will be the support from the hawks fans too.

Just a word, maybe SRU isn't responsible for everything, if a strong crowd of thousands people attended the games it would be easier to go forward.
Come on Glasgow

Hugues and others who wish the council to pay for facilities for professional sports.

Why should I pay taxes to supply these for private organisations?
I can understand supplying facilities for the benefit of the community but asking 600,000 people to pay for a ground for 1,500 - 2,000 is perverse.

BTW the same goes for the Commonwealth games nonsense. Participation in sport in Manchester has fallen since the games.

Montreal is still paying for the 1976 Olympics

Glasgow had great support at Hughenden a couple of years ago, this started to dwindle when Setanta started changing fixture dates and times. Where are Setanta now for the Celtic league, very few games shown and none shown if the fixture does not include Irish opposition. These constant changes along with the now almost weekly ground changes means that Glasgow are starting to lose their identity. (Remember Clyde FC when the were homeless).
If people don't complain about these issues then hierachy would treat the paying fan with even more contempt.

I thought you all might like to know that any money paid for the use of Old Anniesland goes not to Glasgow Hawks RFC, nor GHK RFC, indeed not to a rugby club at all, but instead to the former pupils' (i.e. "old boys" and "old girls", my dear chap!) club of Glasgow High School.

There are 500 seats in the so-called stand, which is six or seven rows deep, has no protection at the sides, very little at the back and a tiny roof. As a result, those in the stand are just as much exposed to the elements as if they were to stand on the open touchline which, of course, at least 1,000 of them will have to do if the Glasgow average crowd of 1,500 turns up for the match.

Great a change of venue does the SRU have specilaist training to wind up its loyal support, or is this a natural ability required before one can join the organisation.

On the plus side we cannot win at home, we cannot win away maybe a neutral venue may give us more of a chance?

Posted by hugh on January 15, 2006 11:39 AM | Reply to this comment

What do you mean a neutral venue which west end do you live in anyway they train on the pitch on a regular basis

Posted by Highlandbrave75 on January 17, 2006 04:25 PM | Reply to this comment

Maybe the SRU should "hob nob" with Falkirk Council officials when they are at all sipping champagne together at the forthcoming U21 games at Westfield Stadium.

They'll tell you how to create a brand new stadium, partly pay a loan back to yourself through a third party and have your constituents pay not once, not twice but thrice when the third party fail to repay their loan repayments on time, they'll also tell you how to cover it all up with "technical speak" in the media.

Confused?...yep thought so! So are we...but the palace continues to be built!
