Scotland team named to face Wales

Posted by Assistant Editor on February 7, 2007 11:21 AM | 65 comments | Print | E-mail author

Euan is the only Warrior to start on Saturday
Edinburgh Rugby duo Rob Dewey and Phil Godman will make their first starts in an RBS 6 Nations Championship game when Scotland face Wales at Murrayfield on Saturday (kick-off 3.30pm).

Their clubmate Scott Murray also returns in the second-row to win his 81st cap.

The trio replace Andrew Henderson, Dan Parks and Alastair Kellock respectively from the side that lost 20-42 to England at Twickenham last weekend.

On the bench Nathan Hines, Simon Webster and Nikki Walker are added.

Head coach Frank Hadden said: "The advantages of the four stand-offs we have are that they are all totally different and allow the game to be played differently. We have picked a team to win this match and by changing the stand-off we will change the way in which we approach this game and play this game.

"Whereas we believed firmly that Dan Parks was the right man at Twickenham, we believe firmly that Phil Godman is the right man for this occasion.

"Rob Dewey took his try well last week and I see him in competition with Andrew Henderson for inside centre. I would like to see Marcus Di Rollo face the same sort of competition at outside centre but Graeme Morrison is injured at present and Ben MacDougall is just returning from injury.

"Scott Murray is our most experienced forward and we have opted for that quality on this occasion."

Hadden also paid tribute to Simon Taylor who will become the 21st Scot to reach the landmark of 50 caps on Saturday.

Hadden said: "Any time you ask Simon to improve upon something he does so. Recently I have asked him to improve the quality of his verbal communication and leadership during matches and his response has been, typically, first-class."

Do Edinburgh not have any other eligible players he could have picked?

No they are either injured or not eligible

Is FH actually saying that Mossy is officially one of our 4 stand-offs now? Has he more or less chance than Ross of starting a game at 10?

Posted by ballinj on February 7, 2007 12:08 PM | Reply to this comment

absolute farce. At this rate we are not going to win one game in the six nations.

Lets hope Hadden goes before too much damage is done. Interesting to see in the blogs on the scotsman even the edinburgh fans are restless about hadden

Really sorry to see Rory Lamont left out, Simon Webster always gives 100% but Rory has been outstanding for Glasgow this season and fully deserves a chance to shine for Scotland too. Also disappointing not to see Johnnie Beattie on the bench, think sometimes FH is a bit prone to talking up the need for changes following a defeat and then not following through when it comes to picking the squad... But good luck to all the boys on Sat!

I have seen nothing but criticism of Godman from Edinburgh fans this season. If DP was to be left out, I thought Mossie would have been moved. It was, though, Hadden who wouldn't play him at 10 at Edinburgh.

Posted by Hannah on February 7, 2007 12:47 PM | Reply to this comment

Okay I have a list: Why was Andy Henderson dropped? Marcus Di Rollo was the one who kept dropping the ball? Why is David Callum still playing? Surely John Beattie would be better? And why is Jim Hamilton still there? Nathan HInes should be stating with Al Kellock on the bench? And where is Rory Lamont and Dan Parks? Frank Hadden has made a mess of this one. Thank goodness Euan is still playing and Chris Cusiter is at scrum half!

Posted by lard on February 7, 2007 01:25 PM | Reply to this comment

if blair was fit i would bet he would be in the back line ahead of cusiter as well! henderson and parks did nothin wrong last week. farrell against henderson was a pretty even contest, with neither making any obvious breaks. di rollo was beaten on numerous occasions by tindall. what is hadden playing at by constantly picking him there? even though dewey is supposed to be an inside centre i would rather see him at outside than di rollo.

and as for godman being brought in for a more attacking, ball in hand game....we're going to do nothing with di rollo in the back line. he never goes anywhere with the ball(if he does actually hold onto the ball when its passed to him)!!

All of a sudden I am not expecting to win this weekend.

at least i am being corporately entertained so that may help dull the pain...

Even Edinburgh fans have been berating MDR and Godman, with Howells dropping them both over the season. Morgan, Peel etc will be watching for Godman's inevitable, endless grubber kicks, and with a supply of easy open field ball will be laughing all the way to the tryline.

Hadden's secret lovechild MDR gets back in again. No doubt he will be delivering the usual diet of hospital passes and rubbish ball to Sean on the wing. I hate to say it, but I almost hope MDR gets a "Matthew Tait" style humiliation on Saturday, if this is what it takes to finally open Hadden's one eye.

If Murray is required against Wales for his "experience", why not play him against England then. I take it Hadden's masterplan will involve a large amount of Murray's talent for leaning on the back of rucks? I doubt Murray would have caught Morgan's outside break as Ally did. Kellock has been on storming form for Glasgow, and if Hall could throw the ball in properly he would dominate the lineout - just as he has done in every game this season.

Hines and Hogg go to the bench despite being obviously unfit - amazing how they can be back so far ahead of schedule when Hadden needs his old favourites back again. Still no proper 7, and poor Kelly Brown will have to chase an even faster set of backs this week.

Hadden excuses himself by saying Henderson and Kellock are being replaced like for like, but picks two out of three out of position in the back row. He then picks two out and out wingers on the bench - which will mean Webster covering 13 (using all his 10 minutes experience there) and Southwell covering 12 (and wasn't that a success last time). And can someone please explain what Lamont has done to deserve getting dropped from the bench. As well as playing strongly at 15 and adding cover for the wing positions, it was Hadden who demanded he play as a centre in the last A game.

I look forward to seeing how good Walker looks when he gets to play with the rubbish ball that Godman, Paterson and Di Rollo provide - I suspect he might find that its not quite the armchair ride you get the ball delivered into an overlap by the likes of Marshall, Henson, Hook etc. This is where Walker finds out that it is a lot easier to look good when you are not playing for Scotland!

Lastly - I wonder if Hadden's first XV could beat the following mixture of subs and not-selecteds? Dickinson, Ford, Low, Hines, Kellock, 6? (Hogg, or Brown played in a realistic position), Barclay, Beattie, Lawson, Parks, Evans, Henderson, 13? (I'd take Dewey here), Webster/Danielli, R Lamont
Get this lot in and let Sean and Peter get them fired up, and I think they could open up Hadden's eyes a bit.

Posted by Ember on February 7, 2007 02:44 PM | Reply to this comment

You could stick Robbie Kydd into that team . . . it's about as close as FH will get to picking him.

Posted by Phall on February 8, 2007 06:37 PM | Reply to this comment

I often agree with what you say #9 but the comment about MDiR and a Tait situation is simply scandalous for a Scotland fan!

Posted by uineill on February 9, 2007 01:18 AM | Reply to this comment

WOW!

Posted by Les on February 7, 2007 02:05 PM | Reply to this comment

Simply a bizarre selection!

Posted by ballinj on February 7, 2007 02:39 PM | Reply to this comment

interesting that Hadden seems to think Scotland can beat the Welsh at their own game - playing fast and loose.... oh well another humiliation at murrayfield - can't wait

Posted by Hannah on February 7, 2007 04:08 PM | Reply to this comment

another thing that gets to me is that if Blair was fit and the minute he is it will be goodbye cusiter! And I still going get why Thom Evans is not playing. The man has speed and can attack and defend. We will lose this weekend and after last year its really not fair on the guys.

Posted by Ab on February 7, 2007 04:29 PM | Reply to this comment

Cannae believe Johnnie Beattie's not even on the bench! Good to see Dewey in though, he deserves a crack. We seem to think we're on for a doing against Wales - probably correct - they looked pretty useful against the Irish. Maybe defeat No 2 will finally cause FH to make some changes for Italy...

The message is clear: play your heart out boys, for Glasgow, and it doesn't matter one drop when it comes to National selection. Sign for Edinburgh and sign up to 25 caps whatever your performance.

Still, Sean has plenty amunition to pin to the wall of the Glasgow dressing room for the rest of the season. The boys will be on fire!

p.s. Well done to Euan Murray. He didn't play that night against Edinburgh. He gets chosen for Scotland

Posted by Phall on February 8, 2007 06:39 PM | Reply to this comment

All very well but over the piece they are ahead of us in the league.
I'm not conviced by the selection but some of the comments are over the score.

Posted by Hugues on February 7, 2007 06:58 PM | Reply to this comment

I agree with comments about Henderson (he didn't do anything wrong).
Dewey could be good at 13 i think.
At centre you need guys with good hands, and unfortunately MDR even with his gloves is not sure at all.

Good to see so many Glasgow players rested before next week's far more important game against the Scarlets...

Posted by mediumsizedal on February 7, 2007 07:46 PM | Reply to this comment

I WAS looking forward to Sat-but not so much now. Why oh why does FH keep picking De Rollo-he was awful in the Nov games & also against Glasgow. He had a poor game v England as well-better to play Henderson & Dewey. Why pick R.Lamont for 1 game, give him 10mins then drop him? Godman has been tried & failed-he does pass well but he can't kick tactically or for touch-better to try Patterson if FH drops Parks. Front row looks OK, but why drop Kellock-Murray hasn't looked any better this season & doesn't put himself about as much. The back row is a disaster waiting to happen-they were shown up against both Australia & England-you can't go into these games without a genuine 7-Ellis ran our lot ragged on Sat & Peel is even better around the fringes. I know Barclay is still learning, but he has been great for Glasgow & deserves a turn. He will at least give as much as Brown, who is a good player but not a 7. Why play Beattie in the autumn internationals, if there is no intention of playing him again this season. Callum didn't look too impressive last week. Even if this side beats Wales, I still don't think FH got his selection anything like right-it would be because Wales are not a great side at present-they never looked like beating Ireland. Anyway-enough moaning-good lick to the team for Sat.

Posted by Gordon on February 7, 2007 07:54 PM | Reply to this comment

Back-row are all the same kind of player - no blend.

Why 2 wings and no centre cover on the subs ?

Posted by sunday5 on February 8, 2007 08:59 AM | Reply to this comment

I seem to be alone in feeling that Euan Murray was outclassed last week. I thought he had an terrible game, we'll see how he gets on. As for Godman starting, what a sham! The game is lost. What is the point of playing a No.10 that can't kick, can't attack, has no tactical skills and 'defends' like a frightened school girl? Phil Godman is honestly one of the worst fly-halfs I have ever seen playing an international. He is useless. If Parks isn't starting then whats wrong with Gordon Ross? I'd play Patterson before I played that pathetic wee pansy any day.

I can understand why you are unhappy with godman being pick, i don't agree with it myself, but the name calling isn't required.

Not at all. In view of the weather conditions forecast, I would have played Duncan Hodge before Godman at 10.

Hmmmmm. I agree on Hodge though

I don't believe it!

Posted by Ed on February 8, 2007 03:04 PM | Reply to this comment

Well, well, well, we do have a wide and varied selection of experienced professional rugby coaches views in this topic. This Glasgow versus Edinburgh conspiracy thoery thing is played out and has had it's day. It's beginning to sound so much like old firm day in the round ball game. If we're using the same Uncle Frank Hadden conspiracy thoeries with Edinburgh shouldn't he really be picking players who solely came through the old N&M/Caledonia region for the game?

be careful Gordie Kevin Ferrie may reply to that

Posted by cecilia on February 8, 2007 03:24 PM | Reply to this comment

Sorry Ed but that really is making the argument silly. Frank Hadden is undoubtedly a very very good coach. He certainly knows a lot more about rugby than I will ever know(but I suspect I may have seen Glasgow play more often than he has.) However he spent 5 years coaching Edinburgh, he knows the players well and when his back is against the wall he is going to go back to what he knows. It is human nature to do that. It doesnt make it right.I think the Glasgow players and supporters have every reason to be dismayed by this team selection.

last time Webster started for Scotland he scored

and that was against australia, going off injured shortly after scoring. before that try he had looked dangerous as well, so should be given a chance against the welsh surely!!

I know that but where am i meant to put time in the back line????

He's a better option than the 2 wingers you chose!!

Not if he can't last more than 20 mins in internationals he isn't. Would like to see Nikki Walker given a start,

Posted by Hannah on February 8, 2007 06:17 PM | Reply to this comment

emmm not better than Thom Evans but I suppose I could move sean lamont to 11 and simon webster on at 14 and put evans on the bench.

Posted by Phall on February 8, 2007 06:42 PM | Reply to this comment

I think the jury is still out at this level for Thom, who I am sure will have great days ahead but probably when he moves back south. Nikki Walker has had a blinding season after losing his way due to the Borders and injury. Again this isn't the worst side.

Aye right, They said that about Lamont!

Posted by Boxing Kangaroo on February 9, 2007 07:09 AM | Reply to this comment

It's the usual scenario where Dan Parks is the scapegoat for other player's shortcomings. However, this time he's also joined by others who probably don't deserve to be dropped. Over the last few years, the amount of basic mistakes made, and penalties given away by the Scotties is deplorable, and are in the hands of the individual players responsible. Blokes like Parks can't do a thing about that. Yet the finger is continually pointed at him. Sure Parks has his faults, but there are others in the side who seem to be immune from any criticism, let alone being dropped, despite their shortcomings. It seems that rugby politics is alive and well over there in Scotland, as it is here in Oz.

Posted by Hannah on February 9, 2007 09:56 AM | Reply to this comment

The thing is with Dan is that he plays amazingly for Glasgow and I dont know why but for Scotland nobody likes him. November tests he came off and Phil Godman was cheered on the pitch. Dan is an excellent player and he can handle test rugby but I dont think that Godman who is only like what 23? can handle it. Saturday is going to be intersting and for all I know Scotland could win and Frank Hadden had the right selection but dropping Dan was not the right thing to do but its the same with Chris Cusiter the second mike Blair is fit Chris will go which means Rory Lawson will go.

Posted by Phall on February 9, 2007 01:30 PM | Reply to this comment

I am not a Hadden fan but i have to say that he has done pretty well.
Dan is out not for playing poorly but because Haddie has said he wants the game to be played in a different style. I am very sure that at some point dan will pull on a 10 jersey probably in the next few weeks but certainly before RWC 2007.
Good luck to Godman tomorrow.
As for the guy who said that DP gets the blame for everything, the only person I have seen being critical of him has been Stuart Macallister in the Herald and he was at the Wales v Ireland match. Any other writer I have read have been appreciative last week.

Posted by Hannah on February 9, 2007 11:25 AM | Reply to this comment

And Thom Evans will not go. Hopefully not cause if he goes his brother might go as well and Max is playing really well!

Posted by jenni b on February 9, 2007 01:15 PM | Reply to this comment

I totally agree Hannah, was relieved when the "Rory's going to Bristol" rumours proved to be unfounded but from what I have heard TE's progress is being closely monitored south of the border and if he decides to stay in Scotland long-term I don't think it would be for want of English clubs trying to re-capture a potential talent. I really hope he is enjoying playing for Glasgow and feels a valued part of the team but if he was made a good offer from the Premiership he would be a fool not to take it. I was sorry to see Sean Lamont go but I understand why he made the decision.

Posted by Parksygal10 on February 9, 2007 12:12 PM | Reply to this comment

I agree Hannah, where I was sitting everyone cheered Godman (I did shout out that "Godman your Crap" that was only because of the people criticising poor Dan, everyone started pulling faces at me cos everytime something goes wrong its Dans fault seemingly, even if its in the scrum it would be Dans fault, I personally think Frank Hadden doesn;t even like him, he favours the whole Edinburgh team before anyone else and that it just not right.

Posted by Hannah on February 9, 2007 04:19 PM | Reply to this comment

I get on with Thom quite well and I dont think he will go back down south just now and I would tell him not to go because he is only 21 and he had loads of time left to play down south. I also agree with everything being Dan's fault. Poor boy! He has played well for Scotland but now that Godman is about all the praise seems to have gone. And from what I hear Godman is not going down to well with Edinburgh fans this season but we should keep a eye out for Mike Blair's brother David cause he is a great stand off and Parks is 28 so he might not play much longer which will be a shame cause he is a good player and a nice guy!

Posted by Parksygal10 on February 9, 2007 08:02 PM | Reply to this comment

Godman has been rubbish for Edinburgh lately, the games i've went to he has played quite poorly, he used to come up the stairs when he done a wee bit ok but now there is no sign of him, i think he knows as well he isnt up to scratch!!! Do you think Dan will go after the world cup? David Blair will be a good stand off for Scotland - the Blair brother, its will be like the Leslie Bros, a great selection

Posted by Hannah on February 9, 2007 11:11 PM | Reply to this comment

I think Parks might I dont know? It depends how many selections he gets and its my opinion not anything I have heard. I think that David Blair would be good for Scotland shame I would rather hos brother on the bench though. Massive Cusiter fan!!!

Game over and donr with. Fantastic game from Chris Cusiter and Rob Dewey. Well done to all the boys. Marcus didn't drop the ball and Godman was not as bad as he could have been. Lamont was not fantastic though?
