Scotland team to face Ireland

Glasgow's Andy Henderson starts for Scotland
Scotland team to play against Ireland at Murrayfield in the Bank of Scotland Corporate August Test on Saturday.

Scotland head coach Frank Hadden said: “Inevitably much will be read into this selection given the proximity to the Rugby World Cup and the trimming of our squad next Tuesday to the final 30 who will be on duty for the tournament.

“But what’s uppermost in my mind, as ever, is picking a team to win an international match as we look to generate momentum going into the World Cup.
“At the beginning of the last Six Nations campaign we said Chris Paterson was not ready to start at stand-off. At the end of the Six Nations we said he was probably ready to start, so let’s have a look at him there.”

Tickets for the August Tests are priced from just £10, £20 or £30 for adults and from £5, £10 and £15 for under-18s, students and OAPs and are available via the credit card hotline on 0131 346 5100 (Mon - Fri, 9am - 8pm. Sat & Sun, 9am - 5pm) and in person from the Scottish Rugby Ticket Centre, Roseburn Street, Murrayfield. Please note there will be no tickets on sale on match day. Booking fees apply.

Hadden added: “We are all aware that politics have been getting the headlines recently but Saturday marks the start of some vitally important games and the more Scots who can come along to support us the better.”

As of 9am today almost 19,000 tickets had been sold for Saturday’s match.

Its hardly a huge change from previous teams - not much innovation from Hadden. Good luck to the Glasgow boys on Saturday, time for some revenge over the Irish after the 6N result!

Paterson at 10 is probably a good move given that's where he'll be playing for Gloucester. Might mean Dan Parks Scotland opportunities are limited though as Paterson would probably be first choice at 10.
Would have been good to see JB getting a game, even from the bench.

Great to see Paterson at 10, it'll be interesting to say the least. Also good to see Jason White back and in a good big pack too. I was hoping to see Thom Evans in there tho.

Looking forward to this one, I've had tickets booked for ages lets hope for a good big crowd!

Yes, will be interesting to see how Mossy does at 10 ..will give another option ..but,if he becomes first choice, will it create a problem? He is essential for kicking points and cannot be taken off until the game is won? So the cover 10 on bench will be a wasted sub? ..or does he just not cover it and hope he isn't injured or one of the others on field can cover? Not a bad dilemma, I suppose ..and Dan can kick!
just can't wait to get to the game after all the summer nonsense!
Big cheer for Ferg from the Glasgow fans when he is brought on!!

Paterson will not be subbed, but he does not have the kicking game for a stand off-he will go to FB, Parks at SO- Lamont will be subbed as he is not a full back, his kicking game is not good enough and his defensive lines are wrong. As a Glasgow supporter I don't think he did all that well last season from full back. The back row is unbalanced, Taylor has had his day & does not show enough committment and we don't have a genuine openside, with Donnie not in the squad KB or JB would have been better with AH at 8

Rory Lamont was outstanding at full-back in the majority of games I saw him play last season.

For my own biased reasons, I hope Paterson fails spectacularly at 10 and is moved to FB :-)

Very selfish, clearly none of the current incumbants are up to the level required of sucessful international rugby, Scotland needs a quality 10 perhaps Paterson is the answer

It's a long road ahead, and many players will fall by the wayside as usually happens. Parks has matured a lot, and eventually will make the number 10 position his own again. He's steady, and reliable, and although he's from Oz, he has Scotland at heart.

rory lamont was amazing all last year at FB and it looks like Frank has seen that. Chris may be the best chance we have at finding a decent number ten. My only problem with this is that I know that rugby players can play into their last 30's in the pro game but both Chris and Dan are hitting 30 are they not? and that leaves us with Godman???? we have got to think about the future of Scottish rugby.

Posted by sunday5 on August 9, 2007 02:10 PM | Reply to this comment

Steady on now! Godman is NOT the future of Scottish Rugby! I wouldn't let him cut the half time oranges!

Posted by hannah on August 9, 2007 02:21 PM | Reply to this comment

no, im with you... i do not think that godman is the future but we have to start thinking about the future of scottish rugby and while just now we have chris and dan we need to worry about when they go. Godman is only 24 and will still be around, we need to look for a 1st class stand off that will be better than godman to play when chris and dan go which is still a while off but we have to think about it, so we dont end up a laughing stock and reliving the italy game every international!

Cussiter was as much to blame as Godman fot that. Time to move on from that now i think

Posted by sunday5 on August 9, 2007 02:50 PM | Reply to this comment

Perhaps but Cussiter is a proven world class Scrum Half and can't be blamed for the myriad of schoolboy errors and amateurism displayed by Godman every time he pulls on the national jersey! With my hand on my heart, I believe Ruddy Jackson would a better choice for Scotland Flyhalf in an emergency.

Posted by hannah on August 9, 2007 03:08 PM | Reply to this comment

whats with the double ss in cusiter lol. ru jackson is pretty good and there is mike adamson? or budgie? totally forgot bout him till now!!!!

Posted by hannah on August 9, 2007 02:46 PM | Reply to this comment

yep Chris was as much to blame but we are not talking about scrum halfs-talking about stand offs. It will always follow Godman and Cusiter about though.

Posted by Alan on August 9, 2007 08:45 PM | Reply to this comment

bossco85, I think he might move him back to the wing if he wants Dan to come on ..and I hope Rory proves you wrong. Anyway, great to see both Lamont brothers on again ... wonder if the ref can tell them apart this time!

Posted by Garyipa on August 9, 2007 09:10 PM | Reply to this comment

I would expect all the subs to get on, remember its a warm up game

Posted by Alan on August 9, 2007 10:55 PM | Reply to this comment

Yes, .. as I said "Big cheer for Ferg from the Glasgow fans when he is brought on!!".. (and from the Edinburgh fans who appreciate new talent even if they haven't seen him much).

Posted by Alan on August 9, 2007 11:39 PM | Reply to this comment

... assuming that Edinburgh fans will deign to come through the gates of Murrayfield, that is! Go SCOTLAND!

There is also David Blair who is highly rated and has signed up for Edinburgh this season, Ruairidh will be a good player in a few years needs to bulk up and Budgie is outstanding better than Godman any day of the week.
I'm going to complain again about the lack of openside in the 22 frank is conceivable only going to take one of JB and Donnie to France so why the hell not test them out instead of picking 600 no 8's, rant over :p

Boys,
Have we not tried Patterson at 10 before, it did not work, so all of a sudden we click our fingers and he can play 10. Please think about the year Dan has had at Glasgow this year and the points he has put on the board. He is a much more matured Dan this season and when he gets on the field he will show Scotland the way to the World Cup. Maybe we need to start thinking about our centre combination making it over that advantage line before we start pointing fingers at Dan. Good Luck boys beat the Irish and get some confidents for the World Cup.

The only run Mossy has had at 10 he stopped us gettting knoced out at the group stages of RWC03. It will take more than that to help this time. But he is still the best footballer we have an his naturla position is 10. It is ironic that the man who ruined this for him is now choosing him there...

And apparently the last time Blair and Paterson were paired together was when (presumably) Uncle Frank picked them to play against Toulouse - the famous E'burgh victory. So there was obviously no point in continuing the experiment.
