John Barclay makes World Cup squad

John Barclay is in Scotland's World Cup squad
Scotland have today announced their 30 man squad for this autumn’s Rugby World Cup.

Led by back-row forward Jason White, it contains 20 players who will be playing in international rugby’s ultimate showcase for the first time, including the only uncapped member, Glasgow's 20-year-old openside flanker John Barclay.

In contrast, two players will be competing for the William Webb Ellis trophy for the third time, lock Scott Murray and stand-off Chris Paterson.

Scotland coach Frank Hadden said today: “I have selected a squad that has the ability to do something special at the World Cup and make our country proud. It is the most competitive squad we could muster.

“The decision to omit nine players from the squad was tough. I spoke with all but one of those players face to face yesterday and thanked them for their huge contribution to the preparation for the 2007 Rugby World Cup.”

Hadden and his fellow selectors, assistant coaches George Graham and Alan Tait, have opted for 17 forwards and 13 backs. “It’s not an uncommon split,” Hadden explained. “It reflects how tough it’s going to be, especially for the forwards playing so many games in such a close period of time, and also reflects on that wee bit more flexibility within the backs.”

Selection was tight in a number of areas and Hadden acknowledged the recent injuries to Scott Lawson and Chris Cusiter brought into sharp focus the need to choose three hookers and three scrum-halves in the party.

He added: “Overall this is a more mature group than we could have chosen two years ago. There’s a fair amount of experience there and a good balance between the power that was demonstrated in our win against Ireland last weekend and a bit of footballing ability.”

John Barclay was a sixth year school pupil at Dollar Academy when the last World Cup was played in Australia four years ago.

“I was injured at the time and I remember watching a Scotland game at my friend’s house when I was meant to be watching the school team play,” he recalled.

A graduate of all Scotland’s age-grade sides and a recipient two summers ago of the John Macphail scholarship – which enabled him to sample club rugby in New Zealand – John was outstanding for Glasgow Warriors last season and from Hadden’s perspective “has done everything that has been asked of him,” during Scotland’s preparations for the tournament.

When did we sign Gavin Kerr??

Disappointed for our captain and Thom Evans, however it's good news for Glasgow. Hopefully they'll be fired up to pick up points during the World Cup.

think by not taking gordon ross shows that FH is planning on keeping Chris Paterson at number 10?

Pretty much as expected, other than Alastair Kellock being left out which is very disappointing.

I know John Beattie was not included at the first selection,
He was quite good V Romania,is he still injured or not at fitness level?

I'm going to get slated for saying this but Beatie isn't good enough to warrant a place in the national side. Worse still he spends half his tim on the floor like a kissballer! His Romania injury was genuine enough but does anyone remember a game where he wasn't lying on his back holding his shins?

i think its a digrace that ally kellock has been left out for some 2o stone well u cant say anythin else about jim hamilton the lump cant even make lecisters 2nd team and yet he s better than a scottish club captain and it obv shows wat type of game hadden is goin for not pickin evans he obv wants 2 bash through the forwards and no running game

You may have hit the nail on the head there, big buy.

I think it's more of a digrace that DiRollo is in. How long will Hadden keep on selecting him when he adds nothing to the game in any way - pish in attack, defence, handling, pace...
Hadden may think DiRollo has a lot of potential, but is the World cup really the place where you want a player to start finding his game (which I'm convinced is a useless endevour in DiRollo's case), or do you want players who have found their form and are playing good rugby now.
Don't get me wrong, I hope the lads do well, but maybe the Bokke will finally show Hadden the err of his ways this weekend. Wishful thinking.
Henderson should be in, definatly. Dewey is never a 13, but does reasonably at 12. And DiRollo only plays 13 - "plays" being the biggest overstatement ever.

thanks sunday 5 and i also agree with goose about di rollo he does nothin but take up space and thank god tolouse hav takin him because he u really cant describe wat he actually does hes just so useless and maybe a hint of edinburgh favourtism comes in with the selections of dirollo and callam who i reallly think is terrible and claims he can only play 8 nowhere else wen players like swindall and beattie r at home

got to agree with last couple of posts about di rollo. He is so average - no pace, no strength and no real ability to step/beat a man in close quarters. I want to look at the back three for scotland though. Admittedly, sean lamont is pretty good so he should be in there and rory is in because of his versatility, although i think even though he does some good runs he has such massive tunnel vision and is soooooo SELFISH! Webster is ok i guess and southwell is probably first choice FB, so it comes down to Niki walker, who i just another big bulldozing scotland winger. ORIGINAL! Although he doesn't have the international experience, i think Thom Evans should have been given a chance. Who else in scotland line-up, or even the british isles comes close to having his raw gas? He could be a real secret weapon for Scotland, a team that other nations, especially non-british nations, will not be expecting to have anyone with any "worrying" pace. He has the ability to run from inside his 22 and can turn a game in an instant. It's good for glasgow, but a mistake by FH and a loss for Scotland at the RWC. Fair enough, well done to Scotland beating Ireland, but Ireland weren't at full stength and they have been on a bit of a bad losing streak this summer. Those are my thoughts anyway.
