The win over Toulouse is the greatest result in Glasgow rugby’s history and skipper Alastair Kellock hailed the efforts of his players.
“We were absolutely out on our feet at the end but we had done enough,” Al told The Times. “Winning in Toulouse has got to be a great result, it happens so seldom. It is just a pity we did not get a couple of wins early on and be pushing for qualification. To get the win there is phenomenal.
“We knew that if we got out of the blocks early and showed them that we had a real intent that we could make it tough. We showed that in the first half. Ideally, we would have controlled the second half a wee bit better and earned a less-tense victory but they were always going to come back at us with the players they have in their squad.
“It was a great effort from one to 22. Things clicked, we undoubtedly got the bounce of the ball but everybody on the park was outstanding. It was great for the club and, hopefully, will spur us to move on. We played some great rugby, adventurous — you could maybe tell we did not have anything to lose — but some of the passing was outstanding to get guys into space and when we did get there, we took those chances well.”
The only downside to the result was that Glasgow left it so late in the competition before producing this kind of performance, and it can only add to the frustration of how the same players can play as poorly as they did in losing at home to the Dragons, and then a few days later play as well as they did in Toulouse.
“I can’t explain it, that’s the honest answer,” Al said. “We just made mistake after mistake after mistake last week, and this week things clicked. We need to put on a performance like this again next week. I would expect that to have an effect on the support next game and we need to put on a performance that makes us an easier team to support.”
