Tom faces familiar foe

Tom Ryder faces an old foe on Sunday
Glasgow's Tom Ryder will face a familiar foe in Sunday's Heineken Cup match with London Wasps.

The big lock - on loan from Saracens - was forced off injured in Friday night's win over Newport Gwent Dragons but he has recovered and returns to the squad this week for the game at Adams Park.

Scottish teams record against English clubs is less than impressive and Tom puts that down to the "unknown" factor.

Tom told the Scotsman: "I've been very impressed by the Magners League since I came up, and I don't see any reason why the Scottish teams should lose to English teams more than they do to the Irish.

"You look at the quarter-finals and semis in the Heineken Cup and there are always Magners League teams in there - Irish sides have won it four times - so they are on an equal standing with the English sides.

"People's perceptions of sides and how tough they are can be different to the reality. Whenever I played against Irish teams with Saracens the unknown aspect of it made it so difficult, whereas going there with the Glasgow boys a few weeks ago was interesting because they were not daunted at all, where I maybe was a bit.

"But I've played against Wasps so many times, and know their players, and how they play, it's not going the unknown for me this week. I'll use that and point out to our guys that they play the likes of Munster, Leinster, Cardiff and Ospreys week in week out in Europe, so coming up against a team like Wasps is no different.

"I think it will also help that we played Wasps in pre-season and while we came off second-best then, we have that experience behind us now and know what to expect."

More than anything losing becomes a mindset as does winning.
