Glasgow City Sevens

The Glasgow City Sevens return to the home of Cartha Queen’s Park RFC on Saturday 14 May this year and will feature top sides from the British Isles and beyond including the city’s very own professional team Glasgow Warriors.

The line-up also includes fellow Magners League outifits Ospreys and Ulster as well as this season's Heineken Cup opponents London Wasps. The international contingent will be represented by Swedish Vikings.

London Wasps boast the likes of danger-man Christian Wade who made his HSBC Sevens World Series debut in Dubai in December 2009 where he ran in a stunning seven tries a week later, making him the joint top try-scorer at the event alongside William Ryder of Fiji.

However, the big guns will not get it all their own way as Glasgow Hawks proved last year when they played some superb rugby to come out on top against Sweden in the final. And they’re not about to give it up easily this year.

Premiership club sides from all around Scotland will be joining those from the Glasgow area to compete in what is an un-missable top class rugby 7s event.

Also decided on the day is the final stage of Glasgow City Sevens for Under 16s. Four sides take their place on the big stage having won through from a qualifying tournament held in April.

The competing teams are: London Wasps, Ospreys, Glasgow Warriors, Ulster, Swedish Vikings, Glasgow Hawks, Ayr, Aberdeen GSFP, Stirling County, West of Scotland, Whitecraigs, GHA, Perthshire, Howe of Fife, Biggar , Cartha Queen's Park

I really like the sound of this sevens series and hope they can expand it in the lead up to the Commonwealths.

2 changes I'd like to see in future:
- have it in June & July when there's no other rugby and lots of potential for barbecues etc.
- it would be good if all the bigger Glasgow clubs without cricket pitches (West, GHA, Whitecraigs noteably) had tournaments as well as Cartha.

Cartha have taken the lead so no probs with them having the big showpiece event, good luck to them.

June /July is not Sevens season
It is the off season for many in Rugby as most start back at pre season training at end of July beginning of August for a September start.

GHA have their 7's tournament this weekend, Saturday 16th April. It is marketed as the Bradiholm Sevens but run by GHA members. Well worth a trip, great atmosphere!
