Rory is loan-Warrior

Rory Pitman has joined Glasgow on a six-month loan
Glasgow Warriors head coach Sean Lineen has secured the services of back-row man Rory Pitman on a six-month loan from Ospreys.

The 21-year-old, who has represented Wales at U16, U18 and U20 level, is primarily a No.8, but is also at home at blindside flanker or in the second row.

A product of the Bridgend club, Rory came through the Ospreys U16, U18 and U20 sides and has played for the Swansea-based outfit in the Magners League.

He spent the summer of 2009 in New Zealand, featuring for Taranaki at provincial level after impressing in the local club competition. He was a regular for Swansea last season.

Sean today welcomed Rory to the club, backing him to provide some welcome selection headaches. The head coach confirmed: “We’re excited about adding Rory to the mix, because he’s got a lot to offer and has made it clear just how determined he is to hit the ground running and show why we’ve brought him here.

“He’s a big, ball-carrying back-rower and I’m delighted to have another talented player to add to our options in that area of the team.

“The competition for places among the loosies is already pretty fierce, but across the board there is the opportunity for players to put their hand up and demand selection through the work they do in training. We've got three back-rowers in the wider Scotland squad for the Rugby World Cup, so it's good to be adding to our strength in depth.

“In terms of the deal itself, we had a similar situation last season with Tom Ryder, who initially came on loan, did really well and ended up signing for the club. Rory’s deal is for six months – I look forward to seeing him contribute positively in that period and we’ll then assess our options.”

Rory told www.glasgowwarriors.org of his excitement at joining the Warriors, saying: “I’m delighted to be coming to Glasgow and can’t wait to meet the rest of the squad in a couple of weeks’ time.

“The coaches have been very positive about what they think I can bring, and I was excited by what I saw when I came for a look around the training facilities at Scotstoun and heard Sean’s passion for the club.

“My task is to work extremely hard and prove I’m worth a place in the team.”

Why the juddering f**k are we giving some hairsprays also ran a 6 month deal instead of Jedi?

In the unlikely event that Lineen reads this it is aimed at YOU!

What a bizarre decision! We had James Eddie there, a top notch player who surely could've been given such a deal presuming they weren't keen to dish out a 1 or 2yr contract with the injury history. With the treatment of James and Hef, makes you wonder what players are really going to be attracted to take the team forward?!

SRU don't do 6 month contracts . but seems they can borrow someone for 6 months .. so, if I contract Jedi to my company, will they take him on loan and pay his wages??

OK, we all like Jedi & don't like McKie. But this guy hasn't done anything wrong as yet so why are people slagging him before he even pulls the shirt on?

This time last year, hardly anyone knew much about Ryan Wilson. This time this year we're not that worried about Ritchie V cos Ryan looks at least as good.

Jedi had to be replaced somehow - give this guy a chance until we've seen him at least.

When was Eddie ever a serious option at 8? Maybe this guy is going to be fit to play for the whole 6 months. Just maybe he's potentially a much better player! Give the guy a chance

I don't think any of the comments are aimed at him personally, just that we all thought Eddie was a good player.

And let us not forgot that we only have 6 back 5 players until the end of the world cup so we are going to have to bring in at least one if not 2 more so as to just have the necessary cover on the bench...

I think Lineen has done a fantastic job and his ability to pick up bright young things is exceptional but a little communication on why Eddie wasn't offered a new contract would be helpful even if it is just at the supporters club meeting

I would agree that these comments aren't having a dig at the newbie, I'm sure he could be as good or better than Eddie. In fact some of you may have seen him at the Glasgow City 7s with the Ospreys.

The comments are more questioning the logic of releasing James and replacing him with an unproven youngster on a short-term contract. A fair enough question I think. Let's hope Pitman turns out as another Wilson!

Your getting a good, no-nonsense, tough tackling guy on loan who can run well with ball in hand and score tries as well. Usually a No.8 but equally comfy on the blind side flank. Gained a lot of experience playing over in Taranaki, NZ for a season. Excellent pick up for Glasgow.
