Andy picked up the game while at Lenzie Academy and then, after stints with West of Scotland and Glasgow Hawks, became a regular at centre for Glasgow and his country.
Andy's strength going forward and rock solid defence, along with his unassuming manner off the pitch, made him a big favourite with supporters and fellow-players.
He made his Scotland debut in September 2001 at Murrayfield against Ireland and scored a try off the bench in the 32-10 win.
Andy went on to play 53 times for his country and featured in two World Cups in 2003 and 2007.
After spells with Montauban and Newcastle Falcons Andy returned to play and coach with GHA, playing over 100 games in the last five years.
