Gregor Townsend will take over as Scotland head coach at the end of the season
Gregor Townsend says he's looking forward to the season ahead at Glasgow Warriors, following yesterday's announcement that it will be his last as head coach at Scotstoun.

Gregor will take over as Scotland head coach in June 2017, but, in his first interview since the announcement was made he says he's fully focused on the Warriors for the next nine months and that momentum is building ahead of the new campaign.

Speaking to Warriors TV, he said: "I'm incredibly proud, fortunate and grateful for the opportunity to become Scotland head coach.

"I'd like to thank Scottish Rugby for the opportunity, they also gave me the opportunity with Glasgow four years ago.

"I'd also like to thank the players who have enabled me to get the Scotland head coach job next season. They are the ones who play the games and do the hard training that win games.

"But that is next season and we've got a lot of work to do this season.

"We've had a lot of special days and nights at Scotstoun and I'm looking forward to a few more."

The Warriors squad have been working hard over the last couple of months to prepare for the new season and Gregor believes their preparation has been good ahead of the rugby getting underway again.

He said: "Every year we want to be better, we want to work harder as coaches and we want to push the players forward so they can reach their potential, but there is something building towards this season.

"I feel we didn't do ourselves justice right at the end of last season and we've now got our players from the beginning of the season and they are really determined.

"A lot of them were very emotional and down after the semi-final away to Connacht and some of our players had only experienced finals.

"To get that determination and put that into our pre-season work, to look at areas we need to improve to win those big games this season has been a good process so far and the real stuff starts this weekend."
