Warriors are among seven sides with three wins from four in the URC.
Speaking to the BBC, Smith said: "We've had to find a way to win games. It's not been pretty at times.
"The two games I've been involved in, we maybe haven't flourished with the backs, but we've managed to win against tough opposition.
"It's to start thinking about how good we can be when we hit our straps and start putting in the 80-minute performances that we know we can do."
Smith was part of Scotland's World Cup squad and played in three of the four pool games.
"It's good to be back in a routine after such a long summer away," he said. "You get back into the groove pretty quickly."
Warriors take on Benetton at Scotstoun.this weekend, with the Italians also on three wins.
"They've really changed the narrative over the last few years," Smith said of Saturday's visitors.
"You can't go to Italy and expect to cruise a win. They've had some good results, so they will be tough. They've had an influx of new players, a lot of them were at the World Cup."
