Stafford McDowall made his debut for Glasgow Warriors against Southern Kings in October 2017 and went on to sign his first professional contract with Glasgow Warriors in 2018. He extended his deal in 2019 and again in 2022.

He had joined Glasgow's Scottish Rugby Academy contingent ahead of the 2017/2018 season.

Dumfries-born Stafford started his rugby career at Kirkcudbright Academy and Stewartry RFC then Merchiston Castle School.

Stafford was Ayr's young player of the season in 2016/2017.

Stafford has represented Scotland at age-group level.
