March 27, 2026Glasgow Warriors 31 - 10 BenettonUnited Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Friday March 27th 2026 | No comments
![]() Fergus Watson scored a try on debut and earned the player-of-the-match award Glasgow Warriors extended their lead at the top of the URC table with a bonus-point victory over Benetton at Scotstoun. The visitors struck first through Paolo Odugwu, but Johnny Matthews responded to level the scores in a scrappy and underwhelming first half. Rhyno Smith's late penalty gave Benetton a narrow 10-7 advantage at the break. Glasgow came out with renewed energy after half-time. Fergus Watson marked his debut with a try to put the hosts ahead, before further scores from Max Williamson, Seb Stephen and Sam Talakai secured a convincing win. The result moves Warriors nine points clear of the Stormers, who face Edinburgh on Saturday. Next up for Glasgow is a Champions Cup last-16 clash against the Bulls at Scotstoun on Saturday, 4 April. Benetton, inconsistent this season, made the brighter start. Odugwu powered through a weak tackle from Matthews to score under the posts. The pair clashed again shortly after, with Odugwu shown a yellow card for high, head-to-head contact. Glasgow struggled to find rhythm in the opening period, with handling errors and injuries disrupting their flow. Their equaliser came in untidy fashion when a loose line-out was recovered by Adam Hastings, allowing Matthews to eventually force his way over after a lengthy TMO review. Hastings converted to level the game, but Smith's penalty ensured Benetton led at half-time. A strong team talk from Franco Smith appeared to spark Glasgow into life. Sione Vailanu's powerful carry set the platform, and Hastings quickly shifted the ball to Watson, who finished well on debut. Benetton thought they had regained the lead when Smith crossed after a midfield mix-up, but the try was ruled out for a knock-on earlier in the move. Watson continued to impress, making another incisive break before being stopped just short. Glasgow kept up the pressure, and Williamson eventually powered over from close range. A superb 50:22 from Ben Afshar set up an attacking line-out, and a well-executed drive allowed substitute Seb Stephen to score, sealing the bonus point. Fellow replacement Sam Talakai added a late try to cap a strong finish, as Glasgow overcame a challenging contest to strengthen their position at the top of the table. Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith said: "The objective of this week was to keep the continuity of last week and make sure we have a lot of players rugby ready before we get to the last 16 game next week. Good to get the win as well. "The top spot doesn't count for nothing. You have to be able to take it through. We've been blessed with not too many injuries and some great results. It gives us an opportunity. "Fergus Watson grabbed the moments that he got. We know he's going to be very good for us. "We expect a tough game [next week against the Bulls]. It's important to kick on and make sure we play well."
