Talakai making his mark on and off the pitch

Sam Talakai has extended his Scotstoun stay
Props often improve with age and at 34, Sam Talakai is proving exactly that at Glasgow Warriors, playing a key role on the field and in the development of younger members of the Scotstoun squad.

Warriors have secured the services of the Australia cap for another season, with Talakai extending his stay at Scotstoun through 2026/27.

Talakai has made 37 appearances since arriving from Melbourne Rebels in summer 2024 and marked a recent milestone with his first try for the club against Benetton.

"Happy to get that done and sorted for the year and quite grateful to have it all happen," said Talakai.

The 34-year-old has quickly settled both on and off the field in Glasgow.

"It is very different to back home. The people have been unreal. People at the club here and then obviously where I stay, my little community there, it's been unreal for my little family to settle in here in Glasgow. Glasgow has been unreal so far so I'm looking forward to seeing what the new year brings."

Talakai spoke about some of the challenges of adapting to life in Scotland.

"Probably just trying to get used to the accent," smiled Talakai.

"My little kids have actually taken to it. They've got a few words and that Scottish twang in them at the moment. It's only been 18 or so months, but I'll just say probably just getting used to the slang and how everyone talks."

On the pitch, Talakai has become a dependable presence in the matchday 23, regularly providing impact off the bench behind Zander Fagerson while contributing to the development of the club's younger forwards.

"Rugby's going that way, having two packs in the matchday 23.

"I guess that [bench] is the role that's been given to me for the time being. You just want to do your best for the squad and try and play your part in the wins. So I'm not trying to overcomplicate it.

"I'm just trying to be as efficient as possible and however much time you get, it might be 10 minutes or it might be 40, I'm just trying to bring that calmness into the field and then hopefully just getting the job done for the guys."

Talakai also underlined the importance of experience in nurturing emerging talent.

"I think as experienced heads in the squad, you have to bring everyone up. And not only just the props, the tight five as well.

"We've had Jare [Oguntiebeju], Alex [Samuel], Gregor Hiddleston too. Those guys are still quite young in their professional career but they've got so much potential.

"As a team-mate and as a friend, you just want to see them not only have long Glasgow careers, but hopefully push on and have long Scottish careers too, so you just want to help upskill them and see what they can do moving forward."

Warriors sit top of the URC and with a crucial Champions Cup clash against the Bulls looming, Talakai isn't looking too far ahead.

"That's pretty cool to think about but we've got to take the small steps in between. It's very cliched, but if you look too far ahead, that can really, really, really bite you in the short term, so for us as a squad, it's the Bulls this week, a big game and obviously a huge rivalry between the clubs.

"I'm quite new to it all but I can see how much it means to the guys to have this fixture coming up and also being in a strong position in Europe.

"Franco [Smith] has really forced that into the squad that we've kind of got to make it count and don't let things just go by the wayside here. You've just got to, when you get your time, make it count."
