May 08, 2026Glasgow Warriors 40 - 17 CardiffUnited Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Friday May 8th 2026 | No comments
![]() Kyke Rowe rounded things off with Glasgow's sixth try Glasgow Warriors returned to the top of the URC table after a six-try win over Cardiff at Scotstoun this evening. First-half tries from Jack Dempsey, Kyle Steyn and Johnny Matthews handed the Warriors a commanding 21-7 lead at the break, with Josh Adams scoring Cardiff's only response of the opening period. Matthews crossed again shortly after half-time to secure the all-important bonus point, before Patrick Schickerling and Kyle Rowe added further scores to cap a dominant Glasgow display. Cardiff hit back through Danny Southworth and Jacob Beetham, but the result was never in doubt as Franco Smith's side ran out convincing winners. With Ulster and Stormers sharing the spoils in Belfast, Glasgow reclaim first place in the standings. The Warriors now head to Belfast knowing that another bonus-point victory over Ulster would guarantee a top-place finish and home advantage throughout the play-offs. Cardiff, meanwhile, still have work to do in the race for the top eight ahead of their final-round clash with Stormers. After a quiet opening quarter, Glasgow burst into life through Dempsey. The number eight was initially stopped just short after breaking down the touchline, but moments later powered over from close range to open the scoring. The Warriors quickly doubled their advantage with a slick scrum move that released captain Kyle Steyn down the flank for Glasgow's second try of the evening. Cardiff responded through Adams, who darted over from close range before Callum Sheedy added the extras to reduce the deficit. Glasgow, however, soon regained control. Matthews continued his remarkable try-scoring form by finishing off a trademark rolling maul for the hosts' third score before repeating the feat early in the second half to secure the bonus point. Replacement prop Southworth crossed for Cardiff's second try, but Schickerling answered immediately with Glasgow's fifth of the night. A stunning solo finish from Rowe added further gloss to the scoreline before Beetham grabbed a late consolation for the visitors in the closing stages. After the match, Glasgow head coach Franco Smith told Premier Sports: "Obviously, we are happy, although it wasn't as fluent as we've been. There's still a bit of work to do. "The determination to stay on top of the game was important." On player of the match, George Horne, Smith said: "He's a brilliant player and an integral part of the squad. What a competitor he is." With the club paying thanks to those moving on at the end of the season, including try-scorers Matthews and Dempsey, Smith added: "We had to deal with the emotion of it all." Reflecting on the six-try win, skipper Kyle Steyn told Premier Sports: "We absolutely needed it. "We have got a tight circle and we know what matters to us. We just kind of stuck with that. We knew whose opinions we needed to count on and trust and it was good to bounce back in front of our fans. "We needed to rediscover or recommit to what our DNA was and we will just keep doing that." The Player of the Match award went to scrum-half George Horne who said: "We pride ourselves on the way we play and sticking to our DNA. "You've maybe not seen the best of us in the last couple of weeks and that's what we were desperate to do in front of our own fans. "It's hard work and determination and then a little bit of class as well. It was great to be back at home at Scotstoun and it was a special night."
