Glasgow Warriors 33 - 21 Connacht

United Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Friday May 29th 2026 | No comments

Jare Oguntibeju went over for a memorable try
Glasgow Warriors are through to the semi-final of the United Rugby Championship after a hard-fought win over Connacht at Scotstoun.

Kyle Steyn was the standout performer, scoring twice and producing a remarkable try-saving tackle in the first half that lifted the home crowd. Connacht led 7-0 through captain Cian Prendergast before Patrick Schickerling's try levelled the scores at the break.

The Warriors struck decisively after half-time, with Steyn and Josh McKay crossing in quick succession to build a 21-7 lead. Connacht refused to go away, cutting the deficit to seven points through Dave Heffernan. Glasgow responded with Jare Oguntibeju going over for a crucial score.

Finlay Bealham went over for Connacht before Steyn's second try put the game beyond the Irishmen.

Connacht, who arrived in strong form tested the URC table-toppers throughout. However, Glasgow's quality in key moments proved decisive as they advanced to a semi-final at Murrayfield next Saturday against either the Bulls or Munster.

Warriors will face an anxious wait to find out whether George Horne will be fit for the trip to Murrayfield.

The Scotland scrum-half was forced off midway through the second half after suffering a wrist injury. Horne initially played on despite the discomfort but was eventually replaced by Jack Oliver.

Speaking after the match, head coach Franco Smith provided an update on the injury.

"I think his hand and his thumb he got stood on," said Smith.

The Glasgow coach explained that the decision to substitute Horne was partly precautionary, with his side holding a comfortable lead at the time.

"I think the train of thought at that stage [when he was replaced] was we were two scores ahead and it's good to come and have a look what is the damage but currently there's no diagnosis."

Glasgow skipper and player-of-the-match Kyle Steyn told Premier Sports: "I was really proud of the boys, especially the first 50 minutes.

"Our big men around breakdown were awesome. We let them get to our line a little bit cheaply but once we were there, I thought the physicality we put in was unreal.

"Just a big shift all round."

Centre Stafford McDowall added: "They're a proud team, and a team we've got a lot of respect for. That's a big one for us."
