In an article in the Scotland on Sunday Calder says: "I would make Jason captain for the Wales game. I think Bryan Redpath has had enough, and his body language after games says it all. You can see he is dreading the next question, usually something on the lines: 'How disappointed are you, Bryan?' I also believe his all-round game would improve away from captaincy. Jason stands out as a leader; he can stoke fire in bellies, and those massive hits he can put in means the opposition are always looking for him, too."
Writing in the same newspaper, Norman Mair makes a case for Jason White being played on the blindside. "The Wallabies have shown that a large, ball-carrying blindside flanker, even if no rocket, can still be utilised to much advantage, the lock-cum-flanker that is Owen Finegan being a case in point." Mair goes on to say: "He is a big, powerful forward who could surely be developed into the kind of belligerent ball-carrier Jim Telfer is after while, when it comes to tackling, he is the biggest hitter in the Scotland team. A player who often stops not just the man but the move."
