Metcalfe is ready for the challenge

Glenn Metcalfe will be desperate to get in on the action when he lines up for Scotland at Twickenham. The Glasgow Warriors wants to get started after his amazing individual outing against Wales at Murrayfield a fortnight ago. It took Metcalfe almost an hour to get his hands on the ball as Scotland ran out 30-22 winners.

Metcalfe said: "I heard afterwards that I didn't touch the ball until something like the 54th minute. I would like to think I will be a bit more involved this time around. That's the quietest game I have ever had for Scotland. I felt like I couldn't get into the game at all. The reason for it was that they didn't kick the ball deep infield to us once. Against Ireland and France I only really fed off return kicks. When Wales don't return the ball to you there's nothing much you can do about it.

"We're marking up at the back a bit differently at the moment and trying to utilise an extra player. We did it against Wales and they didn't kick infield because there wasn't any space. I'm in good shape and am going to try to do what I can to keep us out of the danger zone. I will be as tidy as I can at the back and will try and give us an option in attack but we have got to get right into them."

Metcalfe is one of Scotland's most dangerous players and that he was not utilised properly highlights some of the deficiencies in this current national team. Against England it seems likely that Metcalfe will have plenty to keep himself occupied with in defence.

"Jonny Wilkinson can pretty much put the ball wherever he likes. They will probably try and isolate a player and put a really good chase on him. He's got a fair range of kicks. He is pretty good at little chip kicks as well so in addition to covering deep we will have to be wary just in behind our own line as well. Will Greenwood, the England centre, is pretty deadly at hunting those balls down that are chipped straight over the top. We'll have a busy day covering behind our own line."

Metcalfe is under no illusions about the challenge facing Scotland: "What is important in this game is that we feed off the confidence we have built up as a team in the Wales match, get in their face, shut them down, stop the big guys and put people on the ground. It's a huge challenge for us as a team and as individuals, but one I know we will rise to meet."

Glasgow's Andrew Wilson and Rory McKay start in the back row for Aberdeen GSFP in their game with Melrose on Saturday at Rubislaw (ko 1.30pm). Jon Steel starts on the left wing for Jed-Forest in their Integrated Tournament game with Boroughmuir at Meggetland on Saturday (ko 1.45pm).
