The decision was taken at a board meeting on Sunday and will be made official later this week, bringing to an end a turbulent chapter in the project to establish five regional teams in Wales.
RCT Ravens was the original name given to the team combining the forces of Sardis Road and Brewery Field. But that was ditched amid howls of protest from Pontypridd fans, shareholders and officials as well as British Lions legend Neil Jenkins.
That prompted a haphazard consultation process including various groups of fans at both clubs. The names Glamorgan Gladiators, Crusaders, Glamorgan Celts also went the way of RCT Ravens.
Crusaders was ruled out as an option when officials learned the New Zealand Super 12 team of that name would have made an issue of it, possibly involving legal action. The situation meant that when the region was launched 15 days ago, it was nameless. They quickly became known as "The squad with no name".
