Jon is ready for the challenge

Glasgow's Jon Petrie insists he is more inspired than nervous after eventually being handed a proper chance to stake a claim for a World Cup spot in Australia.

Jon, who came on as substitute in both of Scotland's games during their tour of South Africa, makes his first start since playing against Fiji last year.

He said: "I am more excited about things than feeling under pressure or nervous about it. I am feeling really confident and hungry. Of course there is pressure on me because there is pressure for every Test match, especially with the World Cup coming up.

"But I am glad to get a start because I have had a lot of games with 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there over the past season so it is nice to get a chance to prove myself over the 80 minutes.

"I try not to think of the warm-up games as trial matches, you take each on their usual merit and they are Test matches in their own right. They have said that other guys are going to get opportunities but I am keen to get as much rugby as I can before we go to Australia so I will try and take any opportunity that I get."

Jon believes the warm-up game will provide the ideal opportunity to sharpen up before the real business begins in earnest in Australia but he admits the results as well as performances have to be right.

He said: "Yes, these games are good tests for us because we need matches of the right quality. It would be fine playing trial matches amongst ourselves or games against club sides but you need these proper tests.

"We have had a while off playing and being in contact with the ball so you need these games to get the right attitude ahead of the World Cup. We will all be going as hard out as we normally do and we have got a lot of things that we are trying to work on in the build up to Australia.

"But the results are extremely important. You want to get on a roll going through to the World Cup and I think you need to win with a performance that matches it as well."
