Jon starts at openside against Italy on Saturday.
Telfer, McGeechan's assistant and forwards specialist, named Jon as the most improved player in the squad over the summer. Telfer believes Jon can prove his worth at Murrayfield this weekend. "Jon is a different type of player to Budge Pountney and Andrew Mower," he said.
"He must put his nose in there and get his face mashed about a bit before he really becomes the number seven I would be happy with. It's an area we are building on. Andrew Mower has improved from all recognition since he came in. We also want to give Jon a whole game at seven to see if he can cope with that level of competition. He can be an abrasive player and this will be a good test for him."
