Missed tackles cost Scotland dear

In today's Sunday Herald Glasgow skipper Cammy Mather identifies missed tackles as the major factor in Scotland's 41-5 defeat to Queensland Reds on Saturday.

"Defence is one of the key things that win games and we let ourselves down against Queensland. We rectified it in the second half, but when you are down by 30 points at half time it is too late.

"I think we have a mentality whereby we put Southern Hemisphere teams on a pedestal and by the time we realise that they are not that good, the game is usually lost.

"That is a hard lesson, but you have to remember that there were six guys playing their first games for Scotland at any level and all the deb utantes did very well. You could not really pick out anybody that had a bad game, but significantly in the changing room afterwards Matt Williams asked who missed a tackle and 12 boys put their hands up and that is where the tries came from."
