Matt Williams has called Paul off his summer holidays and straight into Scotland's 22-man squad for Wednesday's game against NSW Country.
Cammy Mather's tour has ended due to an ankle injury meaning a surprise call-up for Glasgow teammate Paul, but he intends to make the most of his opportunty.
"I was surprised to get the call but I am delighted to be able to join the squad," he said.
"I will certainly do my very best to make the most of this opportunity. The chance to pull on the jersey and represent Scotland really means so much to me and it is one I will certainly not take lightly.
"Hopefully I will be able to get on in the game and get the chance to show what I can do on the pitch."
With Scotland facing two games in 48 hours, Williams needed to react swiftly. And with shades of the 2001 British Lions tour, when Scottish scrum-half Andy Nicol was called from the bar to the bench for the deciding Test against the Wallabies, it was simply a case of right place, right time for Paul.
Matt Williams said: "We needed a replacement for Cammy at short notice and it was fortuitous that Paul was on holiday in Sydney," said Williams.
"We made contact with him and he has now joined the squad for the NSW Country game.
"We hoped Cammy would recover sufficiently to take part in further tour games but after an assessment it was deemed that the injury was more severe than first thought and regrettably, Cammy had to return home."
Williams has reshuffled his side, making a total of nine changes in personnel to the starting XV that was thumped 41-5 by Queensland.
Dan Parks takes over at fly-half and Simon Danielli gets a run on the wing in a side captained by number eight John Petrie. Graeme Beveridge starts at scrum-half.
NSW Country, who are top of the table in the six-team Australian Rugby Shield, included former Australian winger Scott Staniforth and ACT Brumbies number eight Scott Fava amongst their replacements.
