Tough choices to be made

In his Scotsman column, John Beattie looks at where Glasgow will be playing their rugby in future and claims that tough choices will have to be made.

"Plans are under way to develop and improve the Glasgow and Edinburgh set-ups. If you speak to those in power at Glasgow City Council they confirm that the plan for Glasgow rugby is to relocate to Scotstoun Stadium, where a 5,000-seater grandstand with a much higher elevation than at the moment is to be built in time for season 2005/6. There are plans to incorporate bars and food outlets below the stand to encourage fans to enjoy a pint and stay after the event.

"It means that Hughenden, so long the centre for Glasgow rugby in almost a spiritual sense, will revert to being just a club ground and the hike to the West End will take a little longer after games.

"I am not a fan of rugby pitches surrounded by athletics tracks, but if the vista is to be bettered, and the pitch level unlike Hughenden, then it's got to be a welcome development."

Aw, I like the personal feel that Hughenden has to it. When we went through to the Edinburgh match the players were miles away and the atmosphere just wasn't the same :-(

What a disaster if we were moved to Scotstoun...
The atmosphere would not be the same. Hughenden has a unique intimate feel, which can occasionally burst into real passion. This somehow seems to fit. Remember the noise in the old place when we thumped Saracens last year. I fear for a pitch surrounded by a running track.
The current location is convenient, certainly from my personal circumstances. Its near to Hyndland railway station, and to good local pubs.
My only issue at Hughenden, which I know is echoed by many other supporters, is the odd licencing laws, which result in a throng outside the shrine that is the beer tent.(surely this could be remedied if there is a will to do so!)
The decision makers need to realise that it is not all about the rugby. People come along on Friday nights for a variety of reasons. To watch good rugby, of course, but also to meet up with friends, to meet with and to promote our city to visitors. Which goes back to my point about the unique feel that we have generated. This has not happened overnight.
Over recent times there has been a huge amount of tinkering with the fixture lists, and competitions. I don't want change all the time!
Please don't allow this to happen without considering what the supporters want...................

At least at Scotstoun you wouldn't have double bookings with weddings

A disaster!!!! I can understand some of the thinking behind this, but do not like the outcome. From a team perspective, the current changing/medical/physio facilities are completely primative. From a supporter's perspective, the current toilet facilities are a joke. HOWEVER - these could be addressed whilst staying at Hughendon.

To quote the article, "There are plans to incorporate bars and food outlets below the stand to encourage fans to enjoy a pint and stay after the event." A couple of comments here. Firstly, those of us unfortunate enough to go through to Meadowbank will have sampled this kind of set up. Atmospere? Special occasion? No. A sterile environment, where we needed the touchjudge to to text us what was happening on the other side of the pitch! Secondly, I thought folk *did* stay behind and have a few drinks after the match. That side could also be developed at Hughendon, in conjuction with the players...

I reckon that as usual the views of the core support are being totally ignored, at the risk of losing all the spirit that has been built up over the last few seasons. If the atmosphere goes, most supporters will go. As already stated above, it is not just about the rugby on the pitch!!!

I agree, it would be a disaster. Hughenden does need some upgrading with the toilets but the ground itself has character. You don't need binoculars to watch the game, the atmosphere is electric at times. I have to travel from Alloa to the games and I know for a fact if we move to Scotstoun I wont be going to any of the games. Its takes me hour and half to Hughenden on time for 7.30pm start due to traffic, without going further.

Why cant SRU consider what is best for the fans and players and not what is best for them!

Those who support live sport do so partly because they have a love of the individual sport and partly to take part by proxy. To do so they require to be close to the action. Distance the supporter from the action and the enjoyment is reduced. That is why there is amost no enjoyment watching rugby at Meadowbank. It is difficult to believe GCC and Lottery funds will stretch to the solution of a stand that can be moved across a running track and thus while it may be made into a great sporting environment for sports participants Scotstoun won't satisfy the needs of most regular supporters. The SRU must also bear in mind that the public transport links to Hughenden are about the best the city has to offer.Scotstoun is at the other end of the spectrum.

I was impressed by Hughenden (just once) to hear the guys when they are in the scrum.
And you're close to the players, and i was happy to stand up, better to be in the game, and i heard a song "i belong to Glasgow..."
I loved it, a good SOUVENIR

I agree wholeheartedly with everyone's comments above. Scotstoun would be like Meadowbank, and I for one am not going to go mto a rugby match with binoculars just to see the other side of the pitch. There's something about the atmosphere at Hughneden that is very difficult to describe to someone who hasn't experienced it. Scotstoun is Ned Central and has no atmosphere to speak of. Trust me on that one, I live about 3mins from Scotstoun, and our house looks on to their football pitches.
Apart from anything else, what about the residents around Scotstoun? It's already very difficult for them to get a parking space due to the amount of traffic, there's a lot of noise pollution, and if they've got 2500 fans invading every 2nd Friday I'm not sure that's going to endear us to the locals.
