Jon Petrie will make his first start for Scotland under Matt Williams
Jon Petrie will be making his first Scotland start under coach Matt Williams and the Glasgow skipper is determind to make the most of his opportunity.

Jon admitted in today's Scotsman: "I have had fairly limited opportunities - this is my first start since Matt Williams took over - so it's a big game for me.

"It has been difficult. Of course it's great to be named in a Scotland squad and wear the jersey, but I can't deny that it's always disappointing not to be in the starting line-up. It's actually a big thing mentally, to get over that disappointment time and again, but it has made me all the more determined to prove myself.

"The coaches have been nothing but honest with me and said what I need to work on, and I feel I've gone away and done that, so I'm glad my performances over the past wee while have led to a starting place.

"That honesty has also been refreshing. Over the years you do get told all sorts of things as to why you're not in the side, but most players would prefer the coach just to say 'you're not in the side because you're playing rubbish', rather than say 'oh, it's about balances in the back row' or something like that.

"The coaches here say 'you're not in the side because of A, B and C - go and work on them'. That gives you something very definite to focus on and I've done that."

Jon also thinks that being made captain of Glasgow has helped his cause, saying: "I am probably more relaxed about things now and being captain of Glasgow has been very helpful because I've tried to take a greater lead - it's hard to shout other players on if you’re not playing well yourself. I've always been quite vocal, but it's obviously as important what you do as a leader as what you say on the pitch."
