Kenny expects a Llanelli backlash

Kenny Logan thinks Llanelli will step up from the last game with Glasgow
Kenny Logan is expecting a Scarlets' backlash but admits Glasgow will target fly-half Gareth Bowen this afternoon

Glasgow face an out-of-sorts Scarlets side in Pool 3 of the Heineken Cup. Both sides have lost their opening two games in the tournament, but the Scarlets' fall from grace has been the biggest shock in Europe this season.

Kenny believes Gareth Jenkins' side will be fighting for pride but agrees losing Stephen Jones to France has been a heavy burden.

"The Scarlets will step up," said Kenny. "But losing Stephen Jones has been a massive blow to them. He is a quality player and anybody would miss somebody with all of that experience.

"They need someone to step forward and everybody knows the pressure is on Gareth Bowen to fill Stephen's boots.

"He is under pressure just because Jonesy is a fantastic No 10.

"The new boy is young and you need to be prepared to lead the team from that position.

"It's a tough one for him."

While Kenny may have sympathy for Bowen, Glasgow will look to put him under pressure north of the border.

But the former Bristol and Bridgend outside-half did mastermind a Celtic League victory over Ulster last weekend.

It wasn't pretty and Bowen missed his first four penalty shots at goal, before finding his groove and firing the Scarlets to a much-needed victory.

Glasgow will be favourites for this clash after a 40-24 Celtic League victory a couple of weeks ago.

Kenny still believes the Scarlets' reputation in Europe will bring the best out of Welsh rugby's flag-bearers in Europe.

"The Scarlets still have a fantastic pack," said Kenny. "Scott Quinnell is still a fantastic player and leads from the front. But I would swap our win in the Celtic League for a win in the Heineken Cup. Form goes out of the window in the Heineken Cup. The Scarlets have a proud tradition in the tournament and they know what it takes at this level.

"We know we have to step up and prepare for them, but they have a real history in this competition and it means a lot to them. We need to respect that.

"Edinburgh doing well last season has meant a lot to Scottish rugby," said Kenny. "We have lost some games we should have won in the Celtic League and we know we have to put that right.

"If we all play at our best, we know on our day we can cause any side problems."
