Mackay resigns

Scottish Rugby Union chairman David Mackay has resigned following a vote of no confidence, BBC Sport reports.

It follows a meeting of the governing body's board and a statement from the SRU is expected on Monday.

A row has been simmering for months over the future direction of the game in Scotland.

Scotland's club sides have been angered by suggestions that some of their policy-making power should be passed to the SRU executive.

Mackay's departure is likely to put added pressure on SRU chief executive Phil Anderton.

Anderton and Mackay were seen as close allies as they attempted to shift the balance of power within the organisation.

Such a revelation requires composure, responsibility and clarity of thought. So cough cough, ahem, in the immortal words of the character Nelson in the Simpsons... HA HA!

My hope is that they all go. But then did Hitler's staff agree to suicide when the fuhrer commanded it to be done after him? Er, no! So what now from the wonderful world of Scottish Rugby? Oh Oh just saw the news about Donnie! S**T!

Regardless of whether you agree with the strategy, Mackay deserves some credit for sticking his neck out rather than simply sitting in the comfort of a committee room collecting his blazer and hospitality. All I hope is that those that have thrown this captain off the boat don't just let the good ship Scottish Rugby drift (again!!!). Scottish Rugby needs clear direction and leadership - if Mackay/Anderton are not going to be allowed to do it who will? Any volunteers?

My comments were more of a cheeky observation that with all the fuss over in-fighting going on the man who takes the fall happens to be the chairman? Only in rugby?

I think there should only be one body. Seperate divisions to deal with matter and a players union to contest any policy? It makes sense now to streamline and find a visionary.

BTW what about SCW for the top role? Knows rugby and once ran his on business?

I suspect Mr Grainger's job has just become that little bit more difficult. Would potential sponsors, franchisees, etc, rather do business with professionals or the amateurs of a general committee? What about Mr Anderton? Surely he will have to consider his position?
