So sorry for Murrayfield mauling

Posted by Editor on February 13, 2005 10:01 AM | 17 comments | Print | E-mail author
Skipper Gordon Bulloch last night apologised to supporters after another Murrayfield mauling for Scotland.

Hopes of an upturn in fortunes after last week's narrow defeat in Paris were wiped out as Ireland cruised to a 40-13 win.

Gordon said: "We committed rugby suicide out there. The fans came full of expectation after our efforts in Paris and we let them and ourselves down badly. We are sorry.

"Words can't describe how the guys feel in the dressing room because we know it was mistakes that cost us. We played so well for the first 25 minutes and one daft mistake let Ireland back into the game. Then they blew us away."

One of the few bright spots in the afternoon was Glasgow skipper Jon Petrie's third try for Scotland but it was little consolation aftre such a poor display from the team.

I enjoyed watching JP's try on the box last night, we didn't get a good view of it from the south stand.

The guy's have a bit of work to put in before the Italian game otherwise we could be at the wrong end of a beating by them too

A point of view from a french guy, sorry i'll be quite hard with the coaches, and be a wee bit long
I'm very sad, i support scottish rugby and especially Glasgow.
You'll tell me, it's easy to find a scapegoat...

At least the skipper apologises about the performance.
Of course about the loss it's a mixture of things.
What i don't like in Matt Williams and his fellow Willie, they don't seem to take responsibility for the way the scots play.
Last evening a Matt Williams interview just after the match,
"to many mistakes" "lack of concentration on mauls".
It's not a "lack of concentration", it's a lack of work in training.
He said "thanks for the Willie set piece, when Jon put the try".
I was very happy with the great try for Jon.
But did Willie see the scots struggling in defence on the mauls in the second half in Paris.
The Irish side secured their large victory with their powerfull mauls.
Italy will use it next game in Scotland, i hope their will be something done, or Willie Anderson isn't the good coach for the front line!!!

RESULTS:
To often i heard Scotland is really better now than in the last world cup, right.
I agree, it's a hard work to build a new team, but the front line is almost the same than 2 years ago.
The results with Australia from the last WC are the SAME.

OK, i calm down for a minute, just some words to finish.
Irish side (Leinster, Munster) is really homogenous.
Scottish side, the front eight doesn't have the habit to play together (Glasgow, Edinbugger, Newcastle, Sale, Leeds, Northampton).
It would be a dream to see the top scots playing for the 3 pro sides in Scotland.

Sorry to have been in a so bad mud againsnt the coaches, maybe just a french shout.

Last word England v France,
Even you'll find that strange, i am not happy with the french, they battled very well, but it's the world upside down.

England= 2 tries
France=0 tries

MANY THANKS to the english kickers!

Anyway my heart is for Glasgow and Scotland.

GOOD LUCK!!!

I forgot to tell something,
Even if the team doesn't work very well, i think the players were very brave.
My Man of the Match for Scotland is Jason WHITE

No such thing as a good loser in professional sport-- time to get real who remembers who comes second

It is all very well for Bulloch to apologise. Scotland were walloped in the mauls - lack of skill, lack of discipline, lack of patience, lack of leadership.

Glasgow could have done better.

Take a look at yourself, Matt Williams and your seemingly huge number of hangers-on

And, by the way, why does Dan Parks attempt a field goal when Scotland are on the attack and he has players outside him???

Spoke to DP after the game and he was told to try the drop goal then, he was against it but you do what the captain asks, even if its stupid. The game was lost in the forwards, backs were working well until that pushover try. The forwards were bullied by the paddy's all game and I dont think they stole one lineout (when they actually contested)

I come back again about the mauls!
I'm still angry with MWilliams after match interview,
"lack of concentration"
I don't agree,
I hope his fellow Willie anderstands at least, there is work training.
A forward coach at this level must have a plan, or be skilled!

I disagree, players lose matches. This is not a new phenomenon. We have been woeful since before RWC 2003. We were jammy to beat Fiji. This has been a long time coming and the seeds were sown a long time before MW became coach.
Similarily Ireland's success was prepared a few years ago.
One bright spot! The success of the U21s

..and another bright spot, for those who bothered to stay to watch (or knew it was on), the girls beat Ireland 15 5 after the "main (non) event"

Phall,
You're right, the scots struggled to beat Fiji at WC.
I heard there was improvement in the team, it's true, especially about the defence.
But in term of results, (Scotland V Australia) there are all the same from the WC 2003.
Anyway, i'll stop to judge people.
I would like to see the Scottish Rugby in a better shape.
It will come

Me again, not easy to explain in english but i'll try.
Of course Matt Williams is not responsible for the individual mistakes on the pitch.
I was talking about a technique to apply for defence around the mauls.

Whats the point then in employing an aussie and paying him and his pals a small fortune?? Surely there are scottish coaches that could do a similar job??

Posted by Phall on February 15, 2005 11:19 AM | Reply to this comment

I agree, I think there are lots of Scottish coaches who could lose just as badly. I've yet to be convinced that any could win better.
SH coaches are often less expensive than there NH counterparts.

Phall,
Think you could get NH coaches for substantially less than what Matt Wwilliams takes home to the wife every week!

Posted by Phall on February 15, 2005 01:57 PM | Reply to this comment

Compared with Kirwan? O'Sullivan? Robinson? Laporte? No, if we get cheaper than MW I think we'll get what we pay for.
