John Barclay is set to benefit from a Daily Record Sports Bursary
Glasgow apprentice John Barclay is one of a number of talented young Scottish sportsmen and women who are set to benefit from Daily Record Sports Bursaries.

The Record aims to identify the stars of tomorrow and ensure they get the backing they need to make them world-beaters.

The newspaper claims it will work with business and academics to give youth a chance and help the nation's emerging sportsmen and women - both able-bodied and disabled - excel in their chosen field.

Their five-year plan targets a range of sports and they intend to work together with governing bodies to provide the best support to develop winners.

If the chosen individuals need to go abroad to reach the highest standards, that's where they will go.

Places will also be offered on the University of Stirling's highly regarded sports scholarship scheme.

And the country's business community will play their part in helping fund the search for our Sporting Heroes.

Among the assistance the Record is giving John Barclay is specialist laser eye surgery to correct a defect which threatened his career.

A Scottish Rugby Union spokesman said: "Scottish Rugby are always keen to learn of any scheme supporting sport in Scotland, and is particularly delighted that John Barclay has been selected to benefit.

"As captain of Scotland U19, John is leading the way for the young rugby stars of the future."

Hopefully they might start to offer decent rugby coverage as well. Actually devote a page to it or something?
