Scotland team to play Italy

Dan Parks plays against Italy on Saturday
Matt Williams has named the Scotland team to face Italy on Saturday 26 February at Murrayfield (ko 2.00pm)

Chris Cusiter and Glasgow's Dan Parks line up again at half-back and the scrum-half came out in support of the stand-off who has come in for criticism after the defeat to Ireland.

"Dan Parks is a very good kicker who sits deep and kicks well, said Cusiter - the man of the match as Scotland narrowly lost away to France in this season’s Six Nations opener," Cusiter tells today's Scotsman.

"Dan and I have been together quite a few times now and definitely feel we have come quite a long way and understand each other quite well.

"We were both relatively inexperienced at international level but the aim now is to progress in trying to be able to control games. You don't get too long to settle in but when we have played well together such as in Paris when Scotland lost narrowly things went very well.

"Key was getting a lot of possession on the front foot and that enabled Dan to show the strength of his game which is kicking. In Paris Dan was pinpoint accurate and dropping the ball a yard inside touch before it rolled over the line. There is, of course, much more to his play than that," added ex-Watsonians and Boroughmuir scrum-half Cusiter who now plays for the Borders district outfit. Parks was born in the Southern Hemisphere and owes allegiance to Scottish ancestry.

Cusiter added: "There are people who say aspects of his game are not as good as others. Like most Australians Dan is a good communicator who always has plenty of chat.

"In terms of skill levels they are up there with anyone in the squad and besides kicking his passing and distribution are very good while he is also very, very quick.

"Overall, Dan's approach is to put players in the right part of the pitch through his accurate boot and while some of the criticism he that has come his way must have been hard he is confident enough to get on with it.

Good to see Dan and Sean retained despite rumours to contrary. Sean needs time with the ball to gain confidence after a shakey start in last two games. Webster deserves start after impressive performance for Edinbuggers last week. Good luck to all the boys!!

I have a lot of time for Matt Williams as a coach however his team selections always leave me slightly deflated.

A front five that has struggled in the previous two games - unchanged to meet the most powerful scrummagers in the 6 nations.

A front 8 that woefully underperformed against Ireland and no unenforced changes.

I hope to god they redeem themselves on Saturday as Edinburgh is bad enough when it is freezing but is infinetly worse after a Scottish defeat.

No matter what happens on Saturday, Matt show some daring you have a get out of jail free card in that no one expects us to beat the English at Twickers or the Welsh so give the others a chance - Dearlove, Murray, Cross etc. The worst that can happen is that they are as inept as the team against South Africa (personally think that will be quite difficult).

Also, Scott Murray's underacheivement looks set to continue and we seem content to throw poor ball in the lineout once more by sticking with GB.

Three key areas may settle the game.

If Matt Williams is using Dan Parks for a kicking game again the quick centre Christian Stoica is going to run at him all afternoon. Blocked kicks the order of the day?

Gavin Kerr's going to be giving alot of penalties away with the cunning borderline rules play from loose head prop Lo Cicero forcing Kerr to pull down the scrum. Dangerous if in kicking scope.

De Marigny's going to be playing a kicking game downfield into from full-back putting pressure on the Scottish defence. One area which pressurised Wales and caused some problems last game in that department.

Really good to see that sanity has prevailed here .. I still think that Dan at 10 and Sean on the wing are the best Scotland have .. and should be given a decent run to prove it

Sorry but how long is a decent run? 10 games possibly? How about 11, 12 or maybe 13 caps to figure out if he can handle it? Then look at Ross who has 15 caps but yet dumped. Was he ever given a run?

Sorry I know its your opinion but I think its wrong.

Gordon Ross hadnt had a good run for Scotland - but when he has played (probably about as many times as Dan has) he was poor - overawed and sluggish

our best fly-half option probably remains Chris Paterson - but we lose our only cutting edge when he plays there.

ho hum

I agree with envy. Dan was seen to be limited against France and was really shown up for a lack of class against Ireland. Gordon Ross should be given the chance to start, persevering with Parks is like saying it's broke so let's not fix it!

Also this comment of him sitting deep. Is that all we have then. Why not play another 5 forwards in the backs if all we are going to do is kick for territory?

Its a wrong choice by a coach thats beginning to sound very arrogant in terms of his attitude towards us.

I must just say that I know this comment was by Cusiter!

Only my opinion guys. Thankfully we are all entitled to one even if we may be wrong ..of course "Alan doesn't understand rugby" springs to mind but at least you haven't been personal! I suppose I have seen the great games they have had for Glasgow and hope they will pick things up and perform as they can at the national level. I will rephrase it and say they are potentially the best and agree they have disappointed me also ..but why have they not performed? Since they have been selected, MW must think they are his best option (and he does understand rugby!). Let's hope they have a good game anyway!!

the tactics were centred around tactical kicking in both games so far - in Paris it oh so nearly worked - but against Ireland Parks lost the plot and the tactic failed - but if you're kicking for territory all the time then there's nothing going out wide - Lamont had nothing to do against Ireland except tackle and when he did finally get some ball he lost it in contact probably because it was his first touch of the ball! - we have to be more expansive and not just be a one tactic team - get it wide!
