Scotland debut for Rory Lamont

Posted by Editor on March 11, 2005 11:06 AM | 17 comments | Print | E-mail author

Rory Lamont makes his debut for Scotland
Glasgow's Rory Lamont will win his first cap as he joins older brother Sean – man of the match in Scotland's last outing against Italy – in the line-up to face Wales on Sunday (ko 3.00pm).

Rory and Sean will thus become the 19th set of brothers to have played together in the same Scotland team.

Scotland coach Matt Williams denied he was taking a chance giving Rory his debut against a confident Welsh side, overwhelming favourites to carry on their unbeaten run in this season's Six Nations Championship.

He said: "If you're good enough, you're old enough.

"Since I've been here I've given around 12 players their opportunity and 12 months ago nobody had heard of Chris Cusiter and Allister Hogg, but look where they are now.

"We wouldn't be giving Rory the opportunity if we didn't have the evidence that he could handle it.

"We've been lucky for players to break the line and be aggressive with a good kicking game and strong running.

"And obviously we haven't been happy with all the performances recently.

"Rory is a young player we've been watching this season and we are impressed with what we've seen.

"We've had him in the squad from the beginning of the Six Nations tournament and we just felt it was time for him to step up and take his opportunity.

"We're fortunate to have someone like Rory, and his brother Sean, with their physique, power and pace.

"The roll of winger and fullback has changed dramatically in the last five or six years and our opponents, Wales in particular, all have a strong kicking game.

"So you need powerful and skilful players and Rory will have his chance to show what he can do."

Delighted for Rory Lamont - best of luck to the team - especially the Glasgow boys.

Congrats to Rory, but I'm a bit bemused cause in my honest opinion he hasn't done much for Glasgow, but all the best for Sunday!

It's kaleidoscopic selection. Chuck all the coloured chips - in this case "chaps" - in the air and see what pattern they form when they land!

Young Lamont did nothing at Northampton - one of the management said that when Saints came up to play Glasgow - so he came to Glasgow Hawks to resurrect his career. He did nothing at Glasgow Hawks, so the natural progression was Glasgow Ws - he "trained well", according to Sean Lineen. He has done nothing - he has not even played at the top level - for Glasgow Ws, so the natural progression is a full Scotland cap. No doubt Lord Lucan of Ramsay Street - aka Ian McGeechan, our national director of rugby - part time, of course, because his real job is with the British Lions, although the SRU pay him £250,000 per annum - has him pencilled in for New Zealand. What a farce! Lewis Carroll could not have dreamt this up for Alice in Wonderland. Bring in the Red Queen and her axeman - off with all their stupid heads!

Moreover, what has Dan Parks done to retain his place? Gordon Ross must be wondering what he has to do to get a chance. Personally, I'd play Paterson at ten. And we know Kerr can't scrummage, so why doesn't Douglas start? Is Grimes worth his place ahead of Hines?

It has got to the stage where I would prefer Scotland to lose, in the hope that the discredited management will as a result get their cards!

McD.. your comments are shocking and out of order. "I would prefer Scotland to lose" is a disgrace for any Scot to say no matter the circumstances! I appreciate that you don't support the team selection ..many will not..most will have thieir own ideas..fiar enough.. but to refuse to get behind the guys who are asked to represent our country and hope they lose is pathetic!

Oh, and I have seen Rory put in some great performances for Glasgow ..where have you been? Why do we Scots have to run our team down all the time? MW picked them for a reason, you may not agree, but, once they are there, can't we just forget it for the day and shout for them?

The holding on to the No. 10 jersey still a mystery to many.

Heard a little "snippet" regarding Matt Williams selection process midweek, straight from a reliable SRU source, very interesting indeeed.

Let's just say I won't be forking out any more hard earned cash to Murrayfield Internationals until Matt's saying bye bye!

Just to set the record staraight, Alan, I have a Welsh father and a Scottish mother and, while I must confess to supporting Wales - not a comfortable allegiance to maintain over the last twenty years - I have put time, effort and other resources into Scottish club rugby for over twenty-five years. It grieves me deeply to see the state Scottish rugby is in now.

What happened to Ben McDougall?

Interestingly, the Australian dope-convict and rugby union apprentice, recruited by mistake by the SRU who thought they were getting his brother, was listed in the match programme on Sunday. A late withdrawal is better than none at all, as the art mistress said to the gardner (allegedly).

HOWS THIS SQUARE WITH THE SRU WISHING TO ACCESS PUBLIC FUNDS FROM THE SCOTTISH EXECUTIVE WHO PROCLAIM A SCOTLAND AGAINST DRUGS POLICY

Posted by Highlandbrave75 on March 16, 2005 08:40 PM | Reply to this comment

Won't really matter. The SRU aren't getting any public cash from the Scottish Executive anyway.
