No excuses this time

Scott Lawson knows he faces competition from fellow Warrior, Fergus Thomson, at club and international level
In today's edition of The Times, Lewis Stuart looks ahead to the new Celtic League season and the prospects for Scotland's pro teams.

The article claims there is a cautious optimism about the impact that the Scots can make this season. However, as the article also states, there have been optimistic noises before without any real success.

"We have an exceptionally strong squad this season with strength in depth and really feel we can make an impact," Glasgow coach Hugh Campbell tells Stuart. "We will have to look at giving players some rest, that is the difference between last year and this year, we have players who can step in. Everybody is capable of playing at this level."

The key, is that this year nobody has any excuses for failure. The Lions tour in effect passed Scotland by and there was no summer tour. As a result, the coaches have had full control of almost all their players since mid-June. They have caught up, and more, on the strength and fitness work the players had been struggling to fit in and all are confident that they will outlast most opposition.

One player it is claimed we should keep an eye out for is Scott Lawson, an example of the new breed of confident young player despite having the big task of replacing Gordon Bulloch, the former Scotland hooker and captain, certainly at club level and probably at national level as well.

"Last season was all about playing for Glasgow and getting prepared for that," he said. "Playing in the Scotland shirt at the end of the season emphasised the step up, so now it is a question of getting my fitness levels up, not just to club standard but to international standard. That has been my main aim."

It emphasises the strength in depth, however, that despite being the player in possession of the Scotland shirt, he knows that the equally promising Fergus Thomson is waiting in the wings to snatch either or both starting places. "I don't see why the two Scotland hookers can't both come from the same club," Scott said. "It happens in France, so it could happen here. Just as long as I am number one."
