Young Warriors point to good times ahead

John Barclay thinks Glasgow's win in Belfast was their best of the season
Today's Scotsman talks to three young Glasgow players who have been prominent in what has been an encouraging season for the Warriors.

John Barclay, Fergus Thomson and John Beattie have performed like veterans despite their tender years. The Warriors have won five of their six league matches since the end of January with three successive wins over Irish provinces topped by a first defeat of Ulster, and at Ravenhill, last Friday night.

John Barclay rates the win at Ravenhill as Glasgow's best of the season. "It was my best so far," he told The Scotsman. "I think the team made 186 tackles, the most in any game this season, and it was particularly special for me because last year over there I gave away a penalty in the last minute which let them win the game, so I wanted to put that right last week.

"It's probably typical of my development, and the team's. Whereas in previous seasons we've been competitive and put in good performances we have done something stupid or rash that cost us the win.

"From my perspective I have matured a lot this season. Last year was a steep learning curve and though I'm still learning I'm getting used to playing at this level and, especially as an openside flanker, knowing what I can and can't get away with."

Fergus agrees that winning has been the crucial difference this season. The hooker said: "The confidence that comes from the realisation you can win is incredible. Last year we beat Munster and then lost to the Borders and when you have runs like that it's difficult to have the same levels of belief."

John Beattie adds: "We are not short of confidence and I believe our players are as good as anyone in the league, but to go away and do that, to prove it to people, is important. The Irish provinces have big supports, but we are still in a building phase really and other than the 150 who came across last week not many people here realise that."

Fergus has turned down two offers from English clubs and signed a new two-year deal to stay with Sean Lineen's men. He did so knowing he'll face stiff competition face at Glasgow from new arrival Dougie Hall.

"I wanted to stay here," said Fergus, "but I see Dougie coming as a positive challenge. Maybe if we hadn't been improving the way we are it might have been different, but Frank Hadden and George Graham have not seen much of me, and haven't worked with me, so the Churchill Cup gives me an opportunity to impress them and I know that if I keep Dougie out of the Glasgow team next season they'll notice me."

John Beattie is still to agree a new deal, but he says the offers he has on the table from England and France will gather dust.

"I am a Glasgow boy through and through and I'd be happy to play all my rugby career here," said John. "I enjoyed being involved with Scotland although it was bittersweet to get injured and miss virtually all the Six Nations. But myself, John and Fergus are as good as any player so I hope we all get the chance to go to the World Cup.

"It is a big team ethos. The guys leaving have done very well here and I am not being negative about anyone - we owe them a lot - but there is a changing ethos at Glasgow and it's exciting to be part of that. I'm really proud to be a Glasgow player and I want to be part of a group that could turn around the game here."

I think Young Mr Low's contribution is also worthy of comment.

I agree, he's been punching well outside his weight for the whole season. He was just brilliant last week.
