After an impressive first season with Glasgow the big lock's omission from the Scotland squad was one of the few surprises in Frank Hadden's selection.
"I genuinely don't think the decision on the World Cup squad was made until Sunday, although when I wasn't selected in the 22 to meet Ireland I felt things weren't going my way," said Al in The Herald. "So Monday was a tough day, but getting a decision at least means I can change my focus.
"I was speaking about it to Andy Henderson saying that, although I'm gutted at not going to the World Cup, I wouldn't even describe it as being a consolation to now be looking forward to rejoining Glasgow, I'm really excited about it," said Al.
Hadden has challenged the players left out of his squad to prove themselves ready should they be required if Scotland suffer injuries during the tournament.
"From a personal point of view I'm looking to get up to speed with what's been happening at Glasgow and putting my game into that as well," said Al. "I suppose you've got to be aware that a call could come, but all I'm thinking about is playing for Glasgow. I'm not expecting a call and would never wish injury on anyone.
"I've had the chance to get in the best shape I've ever been in. I honestly don't think I could have done any more over the summer than I have, but now it's about getting into games and showing I've taken a step forward."
Al also thinks Glasgow are ready to build on the progress made last season.
"When you look at overall results last year wasn't great, but when you compare it with the year before it was better and the best thing was that we felt we were continually improving which is what you are always hoping to do.
"We became more and more effective because we were smarter by the end of the season, making better decisions and because of that we were winning matches we would have lost at the start of the season."
"Experience is a massive thing too and as well as what we learned last year we've been very fortunate to sign experienced players in the likes of Daryl Gibson and Michael Collins which should make us even stronger.
"We've signed some world names that people should really want to see. We really need the supporters to get behind us even more than last year."
