Morrison examines the reasons behind the regime change

Today's Sunday Herald includes a fascinating article by Iain Morrison on the issues behind the sacking of Kiwi Searancke. Morrison refers to a number of issues including the discontent within the squad over the coaching setup. He claims that just a few months ago there was a very real danger of a players' strike in protest at the coaching regime.

Morrison claims Searancke's assistant, Steve Anderson, was responsible for much of the regime's worst excesses, including verbal attacks and humiliation that finally alienated the majority of the players.

The naming of five players, all of whom are unlikely to have their contracts renewed, in a press article last week was also thought to be a factor in Searancke's departure, but it has emerged that the journalist got his information indirectly, from one of the five named players and not from the coach. Searancke was naive in talking redundancies with a player and expecting the news to remain under wraps, but the coach can plead not guilty to the main accusation of leaking stories to the press.

Morrison also believes the departure of conditioning coach Gordon Crawford dismayed those players who saw him as a mentor and motivator over and above his fitness work. Crawford helped White add the two stones of muscle that has made him into the formidable force he is today. Glasgow plan to outsource their conditioning requirements to a series of part-timers next season, a move that is highly contentious.

The article makes interesting reading for Glasgow fans, who can only hope that similar mistakes are not made in the future.
