White celebrated his 25th birthday yesterday by agreeing terms with the club, owned by Scottish businessman Brian Kennedy. Needless to say, his departure is a huge blow to Glasgow while the Sale website claims they have "...landed the Great White Shark".
Kennedy said: "We are delighted to have Jason at Sale. I first met him two years ago, when he came down to see Iain Fullarton and Bryan Redpath and he impressed me with his professional attitude. It doesn't surprise me at all that he has developed to the extent he has. We haven't gone for him because he's Scottish necessarily, but because he's a quality international. It's also important to us that he has a good attitude and will fit into the club, off the park as well as on and Jason will - he's a very nice fellow. But the thing is we can give good Scots lads an alternative if they want to play a higher level of rugby. It's very difficult to recruit a top Irish player, for example, because they have a good domestic league to play in, as they do in France. But Scots and Welsh players don't, so we can offer a top-quality league competition to develop them. If you're Scottish you'd rather live in Scotland, but good players want to play in good leagues and that's where we fit in nicely - we can accommodate their aspirations."
Sale head coach Jim Mallinder said: "Jason is a quality player and I am delighted to add him to my squad for next season."
White is a massive loss to Glasgow and he seems certain to be followed out the door by several other experienced players as the pro team cut costs.
Glasgow chief executive David Jordan said: "We are obviously extremely disappointed to lose a player of Jason's calibre. However Jason made it clear that he wanted to seek new opportunities and there does come a point when people say they want to try something different."
Gordon Bulloch said: "I'm very disappointed that Jason's leaving and it's definitely a blow for us. But you can understand why he's going from a situation we've got right now to a club like that where he sees a very settled environment and a team that's going places. I can't honestly say it's a bad thing for Jason. It will be a good thing for him and I'm sure he will do well. It's a shame though, because he had recently moved and been keen to focus on us all getting back on track, but then all of a sudden things started to fall apart here. It's a very uncertain period right now."
