In today's Sunday Herald Iain Morrison writes about the young players from the amateur ranks who will have a chance to prove themselves on the professional scene this season.

Glasgow have a number of youngsters on short-term contacts

After spending some time last season training with Glasgow Alan Brown of Dundee HSFP has been given just three months to prove his attitude is in line with his impressive skills and physique. Glasgow coach Hugh Campbell was reluctant to highlight any one of his newcomers but he did admit that if Brown stayed focused then, "he has qualities that few others in Scottish rugby share."

Players such as Mark McMillan from Stirling County and Scott Lawson from Melrose are also on short term contracts while others such as Glasgow Hawks Colin Shaw - who impressed for Glasgow at Gloucester - have no contract. Glasgow chief executive David Jordan admitted the door to full time pro rugby was open to these players: "If these guys prove invaluable to us then we'll have to look to the future.
