To celebrate Scotland's forthcoming Abbey Autumn Test fixture against Australia at Hampden Park on Saturday 20th November, Scottish Rugby is attempting to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest continuous game of rugby ever.

George Square in the centre of Glasgow will be transformed into a mini rugby arena to host 'Scrum in the Square', a continuous 5-a-side tag rugby game for 24 hours from midday on Wednesday 17th November. Teams are currently being recruited to participate in this event, which is being held in conjunction with the 25th Anniversary BBC Children in Need campaign.

An invitation has been extended to clubs to take part in this exciting event to promote rugby in the West Of Scotland and to raise funds for such a worthy cause. To register your Clubs' interest in Scrum in the Square simply log on to www.scottishrugby.org. To find the application form click on the Autumn Test microsite and select the match info of the 20th November game at Hampden.

Celebrities from TV and the world of sport, players from Glasgow Warriors, local schools, universities and companies are all expected to join Glasgow district clubs in the World Record attempt. Your clubs commitment to supporting Scrum in the Square will be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions about the event or suggestions of other groups or organisations who are interested in supporting Scrum in the Square, please contact Fraser Bedwell on 0131 346 5131.

As long as it doesn't involve pink skirts and tights, count me in.

From the official website "Teams or individuals are asked to commit to participating in hour blocks. Terms of the World Record attempt allow for rolling substitutions therefore players will be rotated on a 15 minute basis." Feeling fit?

An hour? That's nearly an armful. Team bottle may be required for a cold night.

I'll play in goal.

Well, that's you got a team of four.... you'll need more volunteers to even get a full squad though!!!!

Rolling substitutions are a good idea. I can see a few getting rolled off after 5 minutes.

Are you offering to be 5th player?

Posted by Gordon on November 10, 2004 08:17 PM | Reply to this comment

...could even be 6th as well.

Well, that's an offer they surely can't turn down! You've got a week to get ready!

+ you = 5? Tag rugby is non-gender specific.

I'll be team nurse, I'm good with old clapped out drunks !

I know you're joking Jen, but could be a good idea! If nothing else, it will probably have been written into the event insurance policy - that medical support be arranged for each team!

Posted by Gordon on November 10, 2004 09:22 PM | Reply to this comment

Right that's you sorted out the medical support - just the athletic support to go now...

Probably could do with the old, experienced head of Eagle. And MwB as Trolley Dolly.

I assume we are going for the middle of the night shift so there are no witnesses?

Stalker as coach?
