"He approached me months ago and I know it is really important to him," Hugh Campbell, the Glasgow head coach, said in today's Times. "At that time, I thought we had plenty of cover but, as things stand, we are short. If the match had more meaning for us, perhaps I would have reconsidered."
Calvin Howarth, who kept Dan out last week partly because he had been playing so well and partly because the team management knew about this week's problem, keeps his place. The trouble for Glasgow, however, is that Colin Gregor, who is the natural replacement, is also unavailable because he is in South Africa with the Scotland sevens team, and injuries elsewhere mean that Sam Pinder and Rory Kerr are the only other backs from those registered to play in the competition who are fit and available.
"Qualification is out for us, but we still want to have teams talking about us and watching us because of our results," Hugh said. "It is important for the future that we do well to set ourselves up for the rest of the season and for next season. We may not be able to qualify ourselves but we can still influence who does."
