Sean Lamont in talks with Northampton

Sean Lamont is in talks with Northampton
Glasgow look set to lose star winger Sean Lamont to English ZP club, Northampton Saints.

Sean and bother Rory look set to line up together for the first time for Scotland at the weekend, but it seems they are preparing to cut the family ties at their club.

Today's Scotsman reports that Sean has been in talks with Northampton and is keen to test himself in the Zurich Pemiership. Rumours of Northampton's interest in Sean have been circulating since his impressive performance at Franklin's Gardens in the Heineken Cup. Neither Glasgow nor Northampton would comment yesterday.

The Scotsman also claims that Hugh Campbell, the Glasgow coach, has won the race to persuade talented lock Craig Hamilton to return to Scotland from Newcastle on a two-year contract, in the latest step to rebuild the Scottish professional teams.

The 25-year-old was a victim of the Scottish Rugby Union's decision to cut the professional teams from four to two in 1998. He had left his native Dumfries and begun to make a name for himself at West Of Scotland, but the limited opportunities to turn pro persuaded him to accept an offer to join the academy structure at Newcastle Falcons. He has gone on to make 49 appearances in the Zurich Premiership to date and, having been one of the most impressive performers in training, made his international debut for Scotland against Australia on last summer's tour.

However, he has made only six starts this season for Newcastle, as well as appearing seven times from the bench, and with Scotland's Stuart Grimes and veteran Luke Gross ahead of him in the queue for starting berths - and Hamilton hoping to be involved with Scotland at the same times as Grimes - his opportunities to make the next step to experienced professional appeared limited.

He was one of the stars on last summer's tour to Australia and New Zealand with fine displays against Queensland Reds, New South Wales Country and the Waratahs earning him a spot on the bench for the second Test when Grimes was suspended

Would be sorry to see Sean go south. He is one of the Glasgow's most exciting players to watch.Think he'd be great in the ZP, but would still like to see him thundering down the wing for Glasgow !

What a pity the SRU funds were used to bring an ageing Antipodean prop to Edinburgh and not keep an outstanding Scottish talent at Glasgow.

This is an absolute disgrace! Williams & Geech spout on about nurturing Scottish talent, yet are prepared to let Sean head south whilst signing more foreigners.

Disgusted of Milngavie

Look out for the next signing a rugby league man with a granny from the Isle of Man

The SRU have got to be kidding here! Signing a league player and letting Sean go south. Very annoying.

Be interesting to know just how much effort was made/is being made to keep Sean at Glasgow - hopefully the same effort as has been made to keep Taylor and Paterson in Scotland...where's a Scottish Beef deal when you need one?

A shame, i don't understand all the expressions about scottish humour.
Anyway, what i don't understand is:
If SRU wants to improve the level in the pro teams by import foreigners, at least they have to be sure if the guy isn't second choice, and unfortunately it will be the case because of the lack of the money in rugby in Scotland.

And let leaving the young scots is a disgrace, in this way, the message from SRU is quite clear, go away, and for the Fortress Scotland we'll have a look in the league and guys with Granpa's and Granma's.
It's not about the nationality, but i think the National team has to work with youngs local talent, to attract the scottish rugby men to reach the top level.
Maybe i'm wrong and i'm not scottish.
Best of luck for Sunday

"just how much effort was made/is being made to keep Sean at Glasgow" ..that's the key question. Good luck to him if he got a better deal, it's a pro game, but could we have kept him?

The SRU has made no effort whatsoever. A high percentage of SRU contracted players are on the door out while we bring in the Australian brigade.

Sad to say but as I pointed out to a few on here a month or so ago there's more "big names" on the clear-out list to come particularly in Glasgow.

I did mention one of the "ladies favourites" signing with Northampton Saints last time I saw you didn't I Gordon?!

Watch this space for more info!

You did indeed HB. And as you say, the whispers are that a few more big names will move to pastures new. It's inevitable that some of these guys will move on, but guys like Lamont are the players we should be doing all we can do to keep at Glasgow.
