No quick-fix for Glasgow

Hugh Campbell says Glasgow's preparations for vital games have been hampered by their long injury list
Hugh Campbell says Glasgow fans shouldn't expect big name signings as an instant fix for the team's inconsistency.

Hugh said in today's Herald: "We don't have a lot of players running out of contract at the end of the season, so there were always going to be more signings at Edinburgh."

"I don't want to keep blaming our injury problems for our inconsistencies on the pitch. But training and preparation for vital games can be very difficult when you have only 20 members of your squad available.

"We lost to the Borders because they had experience we didn't possess. At half-back, they had two Lions in Chris Cusiter and Gregor Townsend while Samoan Test captain Semo Sititi was in their breakaway unit.

"We have an extremely talented crop of young players, but they lack maturity at this level - and the ability to know what to do and when."

Meanwhile, the operation to repair Rory Lamont's broken jaw went well. He's now recovering and hopes to be back in a Glasgow jersey in 4-5 weeks.

The Scotsman reports that Edinburgh scrum-half Rory Lawson turned down the opportunity to move to Glasgow in favour of a two-year contract with Gloucester.

I don't think that we Glasgow fans expect any big name signings as we simply don't have the dosh to pay for them. What bemuses me is that we have let several good players leave recently at a time when we are short of cover.........why???

Ehhh...isn't that what the coaching staff are being paid by the SRU to do? Help the young players from the club game settle into the pro game, help them mature and help them along in the ability stakes on the road to the international setup?

Oh very constructive...and what to you propose, we just add water to one of the several instant coaching teams sitting in a cupboard somewhere? Face facts, sometimes Hugh and Shade are working with a back row selection where the oldest is 23, Sean has seldom had a settled back three in two years and the front row cover available this season has been make-shift at best. The only areas of the team where there has been a degree of consistency are the centres and the second row, and how can they be expected to be consistent when all around them constantly changes?

Take a look at the results, when the team is settled, the results are better, but the hard facts are, with very thin pickings, the team will be inconsistent when disruption occurs, disruption including being moved from a tight venue with their own crowd close by and vocal, to the frozen barn that is Firhill, where the ever dwindling crowd is miles away and the silence echoes all round.

Consider this...are you, and all those like you "Supporters" or just simply critics, sitting on the sidelines taking every opportunity for the cheap shot at the coaching team...if so, go and support Edinburgh (aka Scotland A) where you will be guarantted a degree of success through funding, then you can criticise from the comfort of your safety net. Otherwise, support your team, get behind them and the coaching staff, I am not suggesting that you, or I, blindly agree with everything they do, but if you do claim to be a supporter, then "Support" is a prerequisite. We have more than our share of ill informed critics in the Tabloids and in the seats at Murrayfield...no matter how well Dan plays, he will be cursed by the plaque that is a Warriors shirt on his back.

Hugh Campbell does not need big signings, Glasgow will never perform well on the big stage when great players are left in the club circuit. A prime example is Steven Duffy who is the best defensive player in Glasgow and he is not bad on attack too. I think the couching staff should reflect on all the bad signings they have made and quit.
