Hefin relishes battle with Evans

Hefin is looking forward to competing for his place in Glasgow's XV
In today's Mail on Sunday, Hefin explains why he hopes Thom Evans will make a speedy recovery.

Hat-trick hero Hefin O'Hare says he can't wait for winger Thom Evans to recover from injury, even if it puts pressure on him as he seeks to retain his place in the Glasgow starting XV.

Hefin was clinical in his side's 69-7 defeat of Gran Parma on Friday, having been given the chance due to Thom's absence because of a fractured cheekbone.

"Competition is what you need if you want to be a good side. It makes you work harder, train harder and improve as a player. If you don't like the competition, you're not going to get very far in this game."

Hefin scored three of Glasgow's ten tries and he hopes that this will be the catalyst for a change in fortunes after a frustrating season and a half with the Warriors, during which he only managed to score in two other competitive matches.

"Before I came to Glasgow, I got 36 tries in one season playing for Huddersfield Giants, so to come here and only get one try in the whole of the last campaign was hard to take," he explained. "But then I got another one last week and three this week, so hopefully I can push on from there."

"The result was awesome and we needed it," he added. "Hopefully that will attract a few more people through the gate next weekend.

"The first half was really good, and so in the second half, I got my hands on the ball a bit too. It was just a good team performance, I think everyone in the backline scored, except Graeme Beveridge."

"That's the kind of perormance we have been looking for. You might say that Parma weren't up to much, but you can only beat what has been put in front of you - and in the past we have struggled against teams like that."

"We want to get the ball in hand and try things, and hopefully we can do that now weve got a bit of momentum."

Well done Heffin! Unfortunately prior commitments meant I had to miss what was clearly a great performance from both Heffin and the rest of the gang. However, I don't undertsand the contention the Thom's absence gave Heffin a start, the games I have seen this season have had both players on the field, and unless I am mistaken, starting together in matches. Heffin is probably our most determined player in the backs and despite his lack of tries thus far, has been by far the most effective in terms of penetration at either 13 or 14. It is good to hear he is really ready for some more challenging games, and I personnally think he will deliver great results given some decent ball. It must be heartening for the pack to see the ball charging forward under Heff's arm this season rather than laguishing along a static line as so often was the case before.

We are priviledged to have both Heffin and Thom, I would ink them both in on the team sheet right now, particulalry Heffin who is very versatile. What we do not need are the kind of childish remarks, (meant in humour or otherwise), that have been made above.

Lamont was injured earlier in the season. Personally I think Hefin is better at 13. He offers something different in midfield and his ability to step around traffic is a bit wasted on the wing.

Dear Jim,
I am entitled to my opinion and I feel that Thom is far better than Hefin. The comment wasn't made in humour, it was serious. O'Hare was an average league player, and a below average union player. plus he doesn't qualify for scotland, so wot use is he to Glasgow and Scotland?

What use is he to Glasgow? Surely you're not THE Dan Parks, are you?

He's a lot of use to Glasgow and has been raising his game recently, Jim is right, we are lucky to have him as he seems to be fairly diverse. That said, you are also correct when you say he isn't as good a player as Evans. Thats plain to see.

Forget Scotland, that is a non-argument, we can draw on players from anywhere, including the likes of big Nathan the recently appointed Captain at USAP and any other player in any other league who qualifies...to restrict our thinking to the 3 Scottish sides is insular indeed. As Alistair correctly points out, Heffin is an excellent player at 13 , always finding space. In addition, mediumsizedal has clearly articulated on this forum the potential that exists with Scott Barrow & Heffin together. My contention is not that we should drop Thom, simply that, with zero budget, we are damned lucky to have a player of Heffin's quality. It is clear that you (Dan Parks (sic)) do not like him, but that is for you to deal with, the wider Hughenden faithful thankfully seem to have a better grip of reality.

So wot benefit is O'Hare giving to Glasgow? He's scored 5 tries in a season and a half, and 3 of them were against Parma, possibly the worst team I have seen in a pro game. Not exactly a clinical finisher then. Could Jim please tell me wot qualities Hefin has, if any.

P.S have no issues with O'Hare, jus don't rate him at all!!!!

Out of interest Mr Parks, what do the rest of the team make of him? I had no idea there were such divisions in the squad. Oh and what do you think of Colin Gregor?

What are you on about. I'm not really Dan Parks. If you want the answers to your questions then ask somebody in the team. I am merely voicing my opinions on a player. Oh, and by the way, I think Colin Gregor is quite good.

While I like Hefin at 13 I think a Barrow/Hefin midfield is a non-starter. Whatever you might think of Hederson in an attacking role you cannot argue against his defensive contributions, he's like haveing two players. I was just rewatching the Scotland-France game, admittedly a game where Henderson stepped it up, and one tackle (among a dozen peaches) he put in against a French player required 4 French players to retrieve the ball agaisnt Henderson alone!

Without Henderson the Glasgow midfield becomes worryingly porus.

Barrow/Hefin should, hopefully, never happen. Henderson is by far our best center.
